  2. Challenge • 23,500 students dropped out of High School in NC during the school year 2006-07 • Cost of $169 million dollars annually to the taxpayers of NC • 4 yr graduation rate reported in 05-06 was 69.5% reflecting an actual dropout rate of 30.5%

  6. Gateway Training Model • Identification of School Dropouts • Gateway Orientation • Student Assessment/Common Intake • Identification/Application of Supportive Services • Classroom/Work-Based Training • Graduation/Re-enrollment • Advancement to post secondary education and/or employment

Opportunity The Drop Out Rate Will Decrease And The Graduation Rate Will Increase If: • Grade 11 & 12 Dropouts Complete The Program Before The Target Date (21st Day Of The Next School Year) • Grade 9 & 10 Dropouts Are Recovered and Return To School Before The Target Date (21st Day Of The Next School Year)

  8. Alternative Learning Center • The JobLink Annex • An Extension Of Central Haywood • Flex Schedule • Operating Hours: 8:00 a.m. To 8:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. to noon on Friday • Instruction Classroom Based Work Based • Distance Learning

  9. Advantages to Students • Flexible Schedule For Instruction • Multiple Instructional Strategies • Year Round School Schedule • Exposure to all JobLink Partners • Maximize potential for supportive services • Linkages to post secondary education and/or employment opportunities

HCS is a charter partner of the Haywood County JobLink in 1995 (first in the state) Haywood County JobLink Partners: • Employment Security Commission • Haywood County Schools • Haywood Community College • Haywood County DSS • Haywood Vocational Opportunities • Mountain Projects • NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation • Job Corps • Council on Aging • NC Services for the Blind

  11. Has it Worked? • Recovered and Graduated Approximately 100 Previous Dropouts • Reduced Number of Drop Out Events • Factor in Increased HCS Graduation Rates

  13. MOVING FORWARD • Address the 9th and 10th grade Potential Dropout Population • Accounts for 64% of the Projected 2007-08 Dropouts (104 of 162) • Prevent Repeat Drop Out Events

  14. Awards $100,00 Grant • One of the largest-ever corporate commitments to high school retention and workforce readiness • Haywood County Schools received one of only 3 grants awarded by AT&T in NC and 1 of 117 grants awarded Nationally

Strategy: • Expand Prevention and Credit Recovery Opportunities for Students in Grades 9 -10 • Expand Alternative Learning Opportunities and Credit Recovery at All High Schools • Add Instructional Staff • Increase EC Services at ALC • Promote Increased Drop Out Awareness at HCS High Schools • Increase Administrative Oversight to Drop Out Process • Aggressively Market Recovery/Re-Entry Opportunities • Additional Follow-Up for Accurate Dropout Tracking
