  2. Any Questions? * What causes gall stones? --------------------------------- * What is the purpose of the gall bladder? Can you live without it? ----------------------------------

  3. Anatomy • The gall bladder is a hollow, pear-shaped organ that measures about 4 inches in length and 1 inch in diameter. • It is divided into three sections: fundus, body, and neck. • It is connected to the liver by the hepatic duct. • The gall bladder is a green color due to the bile it contains.

  4. Physiology • The gall bladder’s main function is to store bile and concentrate. • Bile is produced in the liver and dissolves fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food. • When fatty food enters digestive tract, it triggers this process in the gall bladder.

  5. Bile Ducts • The neck of the gall bladder tapers and connects to the biliary tree via the cystic duct, which then joins the common hepatic duct to become the common bile duct. -wikipedia.org

  6. Location?! The gall bladder sits in a concavity of the liver [the gallbladder fossa].

  7. Yummy…?

  8. The Curse of Gall Stones! Gall stones form when there is an excessive amount of fat in the gall bladder. Basically, these stones clog up the bile ducts and the bile cannot be drained into the small intestine.

  9. Symptoms Because the bile ducts are clogged, gall stones lead to intense and sudden pain in the abdomen and back (that can last several hours). Usually, this pains starts after eating. Also, jaundice can occur, along with fever and pale stools.

  10. Treatments • A minor case of cholesterol stones can be dissolved with an oral medication. • Stones can be broken up with ultrasonic shock waves. • Or, you can just remove the entire gall bladder surgically. [Much more efficient, in my opinion]

  11. Didya know? • A gallstone's size can be as small as a sand grain or as large as a golf ball. • The gall bladder usually stores about 1.7 fluid ounces of bile. • Gall stones are more common in women who are pregnant, taking estrogen, or birth control pills.
