  1. Jim Crow Laws And Racial Segregation Left: A stereotypical depiction of the character “Jim Crow”, upon which future laws would be named.

  2. Where do these laws get there name? “Jim Crow” was the name given to the black minstrel portrayed in many southern US plays around the turn of the 20th Century. This character was the butt of all of the white actors jokes, was tormented and bullied and was never put in a position of authority or dominance. The character itself was played by a white person with boot-polish on his face, which is why this is so offensive today.

  3. Where do these laws get there name? (cont.) • Due to this, “Jim Crow” laws was an offensive term. However, at the time society deemed the term to be acceptable as black people had no recourse in the matter. • Imagine that a law was passed to discriminate against you, and to further agitate you they gave it an offensive name to really rub salt in the wounds • This is why the “Black Face” skit on “Hey, Hey. It’s Saturday” caused such an outpouring of anger, both here and overseas.

  4. Some YouTube clips Some examples of Jim Crow Laws • An Overview of Jim Crow Laws (Until 2:50 mins) • A History of the Rise and Fall of Jim Crow Laws • So what are we able to infer from these YouTube clips? • How do you feel about the treatment of black people in America’s history?

  5. Separate but Equal: The Law of the Land

  6. Non-Violent Passive Resistance What is Non-Violent Passive Resistance? Non-Violent – Not stooping violent and inciting actions in order to provoke further violence and hatred. Acting civilised at all times. Passive – Inactive or subdued. In this case, acting against laws and oppressors through sitting in the wrong area or marching / protesting. Resistance – Not allowing, or putting up with, something to happen to them. Resisting racial inequality.

  7. How was this achieved?

  8. Why was this method preferred to violence? • Discuss with the person next to you: • Would you choose to show non-violent passive resistance, in order to not stoop to your oppressors low, or show your strength and figth against your oppressors to show that you are not scared? • There is no wrong answer but there is clearly a more effective method.

  9. Sit-Ins • This YouTube clip highlights: • What a sit-in is. • How it worked. • Why they were effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc51xLkT_cU&feature=related Was this a brave / risky thing to do for the two white people involved?
