Events that led to Jim Crow Laws • Reconstruction period of 1865-1877 • Jim Crow Laws started because the states took away African-Americans rights • Between 1870 and 1871 Congress passed the enforcement act law • After the civil war most states in the south passed anti-African American Laws
Constituional issues of Jim Crow Laws • African-Americans were basically stripped of their rights • They had “separate but equal” meaning that African Americans had to use different things from White Americans
Continued • Africans-Americans weren't able to vote. • Required the segregation of races in common areas
Result of Jim Crow Laws • Irene Morgan V. Virginia ruled segregation In interstate unconstitutional. • In Brown V. Board of education the court held that separate facilities were inherently unequal in public places.
Continued • President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. • The Voting Act of 1965 ended legally sanctioned state barriers for voting for all federal, state, and local elections
Effect in the Constitution • Important to know because it started the segregation between African-Americans and White Americans • “Separate But Equal”
