  1. Scenario Organisation: Packing Bags Scenario 1: How to pack your bags when going away John’s parents are divorced and he lives with each parent on alternate weeks. He also goes to stay at short-time living facilities every other weekend. On alternate weekends he stays in a short-stay residential centre. John has spare clothes and other necessities in the home of each parent but, when going to the residential centre, he needs to pack his bag with items to last him three days. Currently John gets help packing his things but often gets angry if something is missing, blaming whichever parent was responsible for packing his bag, whenever he arrives at either house or when at the residential centre. The HANDS toolset can help this pupil do his own packing. If the list is compiled with the student then no blame can be apportioned to either his Mother or Father.

  2. Solution Solution: If I pack my own bags I cannot blame anyone else for any missing items! 1. Pedagogical consideration: Collaboration is required with both parents, those at the residential centre and, of course, the pupil himself. 2. Create separatelistswith the pupil showing what items he needs to bring to both parents’ homes and the residential centre; remembering to include non-essential items such as books, magazines, and his Nintendo DS amongst others. 3. Operation on CoMe: Create an appointment in HIPD for the times when the pupil is going to pack his things. 4. Operation on CoMe: Create a PT that contains the steps needed to complete the packing 5. If required: Set rewards. 6. Pedagogical work: Initially, organise someone to help the pupil pack his bags correctly.

  3. Steps • Steps • Create a PT that will guide the pupil through the packing process. • Click the PT icon next to your pupil. • Click ”Add new story” , name the story and write a short description. • Click ”Add” then click ”manage story steps” icon • Click on ”Add step”. Add the the steps needed to complete the packing.

  4. 6. The steps for this pupils are: • Take out your travelbag • Put in following items: • 2 pairs of jeans • 1 pair of sweatpants • 2 sweaters • 3 T-shirts • 4 pairs of underwear • 4 pairs of socks • Go to the bathroom • Take your toilet-bag • Put in: • Toothbrush • Toothpaste • Shampoo • Put the toiletbag in your travelbag • Check that your DS is in its case and put it in the travelbag • * Put the travel bag in the hallway. • * Done!

  5. Steps Steps: 7. Create on ”appointment” in HIDP. Click on HIPD icon next to your pupil 8. Click ”Add new appointment” and set category, where and date and time when the pupil is to do the packing 9. Remember to add the PT 10. Save the appointment as a template so that it will be added to the template list and then in the future you can drag and drop it into your timetable.

  6. Tips • Tips: • What instructions does the pupil need? Does he require pictures or is text enough? • Remember to do things the positive way. It could be a good idea to add a convinient moment with a PT that tells the pupil how good it is and what benefits it brings to do his own packing • It would be advantageous and positive for the student to have included , within his PT a positive ’reward’ informing him of the benefits of doing his packing himself. • Ensure, by listening to the pupil’s needs, that his ’to pack’ lists are constantly updated. • You could look at the following tunnels for more guidance: • Tunnel 2 – Metatunnel • Organization outside of school • Independence training • How to work with rewards • How to work with motivation • Building self esteem
