  1. Piggy’s Glasses Fire Starting 101

  2. First we need to see how light works. • Here’s how the eye uses light to see… • The Eye

  3. Where does light enter the eye? • Pupil • Lens • Optic nerve • Sclera

  4. What is the function of the lens? • Adjust the amount of light hitting the retina • Focus the light on the retina • Protects the retina • Supports the retina

  5. What is the function of the retina? • Interprets the light signals • Translates light into electrical signals • Supports the optic nerve • Only A and B

  6. Why do you think the glass in the frames of a pair of glasses is called a lens?

  7. What if the Lens can’t do its job? • Causes for Blurry Vision

  8. What happens if the bending of light is caused by something other than our eye?

  9. Farsightedness • When you are farsighted, light focuses: • Too far forward • Too far back • Two different places

  10. If you wanted to catch the fish in the river, how would you compensate? • Reach below where you see the fish. • Get closer to the water. • Move farther away from the water. • Reach above where you see the fish.

  11. Changes in temperature can cause light to bend as well. We commonly call this “mirages”. • Mirages

  12. Sometimes light can refract so much that it cannot leave the material it is in.

  13. Here is how corrective lenses work: • Lens Applet

  14. As the real object is moved farther away from the lens, the image • Moves farther from the lens • Appears bigger • Moves closer to the lens • Appears smaller • Both C and D [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  15. How would this apply to the sun? • The sun is bright so the image is also bright. • The image is close to the lens. • The image is small. • Both A and B • Both A, B, and C
