  3. HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome • The virus that causes HIV infection. During infection, the virus attacks and destroys the infection-fighting CD4 cells of the body’s immune system. Losing these cells makes it difficult for the immune system to fight infections. • The most advanced form of HIV infection. • A diagnosis of AIDS requires an HIV positive person to have a CD4 count of less than 200 cells/mm3 (healthy is 500-1200 cells/mm3), or an AIDS defining condition (this includes infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis and some cancers).

  4. 1981a deadly cancer is found among groups of homosexual men and IV drug users. Relatively healthy young men are dying fast with Kaposi’s Sarcoma (a rare tumor that shows up as lesions on the skin) or a rare and deadly type of pneumonia. • 1981Many are wrongly referring to this disease as “Gay-related immune deficiency” (GRID) under the assumption that gay men are the only ones suffering. • 1982 The CDC (Center for Disease Control)finally has a name for what is killing thousands of gay men and IV drug users: AIDS. • 1983 Researchers are able to isolate the retrovirus responsible for AIDS. This virus is given the name, HIV in 1986. • 1985Ryan White, a teenager from Indiana, is expelled from school after his AIDS diagnosis following a blood transfusion. His diagnosis and the court battle that followed changed the way many viewed the disease. • 1987 The first FDA approved AIDS drug, AZT (Azidothymidine- slows the progression of AIDS) is developed, saving the lives of many.

  5. December 1, 1988 The first World’s AIDS Day takes place. • 1988 The CDC reports that African American women comprise half of all AIDS cases among women. • 1991Freddie Mercury, lead singer for the band Queen, dies of AIDS 24 hours after announcing his illness. “Magic” Johnson, LA Lakers star, announces this same year that he has tested positive for HIV and will be retiring from basketball. • 2004The leading cause of death worldwide among people 15-59 is HIV/AIDS. • 2011More than 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection and nearly 600,000 have died because of AIDS since the disease first appeared in 1981.

  6. 20%of those infected with HIV do not know they have it. • 53%of gay and bisexual men still represent the majority of new HIV infections. • 48%of people living with HIV are gay and bisexual men. • 12%of IV users are newly infected each year. • 19%of current or past IV users are living with the disease. • 27%of women are newly infected. • 64%of those women are black.

  7. 198768% of Americans thought that the HIV/AIDS pandemic was the most urgent health problem facing our nation. • 2011 Only 7% of Americans feel HIV/AIDS is an urgent problem. • As of June 2011 13 states had waiting lists for AIDS drug assistance programs. 8,500 people are waiting for these life-saving drugs. • This world pandemic sees 2.6 million new infections each year with 1.8 million people dying.

  8. Current treatment • ART- Antiretroviral Therapy. The current recommended treatment for HIV. Involves taking a combination of three or more anti-HIV medications from at least two different drug classes every day to control the virus. • Timothy Ray Brown- German man cured of AIDS after having a Bone Marrow Transplant from a person with immune cells.
