  2. What is Assessment? • Standardized Assessment • CASAS • BEST • TABE • ABLE • Alternative Assessment

  3. What is Alternative Assessment • Performance based Assessment • Authentic Project Assessment • Portfolio Assessment • Checklists • Rubrics • Journal Assessment

  4. Portfolio Assessment • Progress portfolios -- collections of student writing and other evidence of learning -- are for assessing learning progress • Presentation portfolios -- polished examples of end products from a progress portfolio -- are for demonstrating outcomes

  5. Checklists • One assessment strategy is a list of possible learning objectives which could be accomplished through the project. A student chooses her or his objectives, then the student, teacher or both assess progress. • These objectives could come from SCANS competencies, NFF, or a list of GED competencies.

  6. Rubrics The advantages of using rubrics in assessment are that they: • allow assessment to be more objective and consistent focus the teacher to clarify his/her criteria in specific terms • clearly show the student how their work will be evaluated and what is expected • promote student awareness of about the criteria to use in assessing peer performance • provide useful feedback regarding the effectiveness of the instruction • provide benchmarks against which to measure and document progress So what does a Rubric look like?

  7. Designing Rubrics • A Rubric • Rubric Construction Set • The Rubric Bank

  8. Performance Based Assessment “…focuses on simulated real-life situations in which learners must have minimal functional competence in using the target language in order for real communication (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) to …occur.” http://carla.acad.umn.edu/MLPA-miniguide/performance.html

  9. What are the components? • Contextualized • Authentic • Task Based • Learner Centered How to set up a PBA

  10. Journal Assessment • Allows both learner and teacher to reflect on processes. http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~mathed/t/rc/jour/JOURNAL.HTM
