  2. Manifest Destiny • The belief that it was the destiny of the United States to expand its borders from “sea to sea” across the North American continent. • John L O’Sullivan came up with the slogan in 1845.

  3. Oregon Country • It is a huge area of land between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. North of California. • Washington and Oregon originated from the Oregon Territory. • Came from a treaty with Great Britain.

  4. Oregon Trail • The journey was 2,000 miles long. • Started in the Mississippi Valley . • The trail went over the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains. • It crossed the Mississippi, Columbia, Platt, and Snake Rivers. • “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!” means the line of latitude that the United States insisted was the boundary.
