Parent Portal Pilot Using Technology to Connect Parents and Schools Report to the Board of Trustees March 22, 2005
What is a Web Portal? • a web site where content (information and services) is tailored to the user based on the individual’s role (e.g. parent, employee, student) via a unique user name and password • NISD’s parent portal, called Parent Connection, will roll out in three phases
Rationale for a Parent Portal • Directly supports increased school and student accountability and performance by fostering early intervention, effective planning, communication, and parent involvement • Web and e-mail access to information has become a common part of our culture and parent expectations • Secure technology is available to leverage existing data
NISD Parent Portal Phase I • Pinnacle Internet Viewer • Parents may view daily grades and attendance for their own student(s) • Automatically extracts information from the teachers’ gradebooks • Pilot in March 2005 at four schools (Stevenson, Rawlinson, Warren, Clark), with intent to bring all secondary schools onboard in fall 2005
NISD Parent Portal Phase II • Curriculum Management System “Outreach” Module • Parents may view longitudinal assessment data (e.g. TAKS, SDAA, AP, PSAT, etc.), benchmark assessment data, demographic data, teacher web pages, class calendars, etc. for their own student(s) • Pilot / launch in spring 2006
NISD Parent Portal Phase III • Other School Business • Parents may view and/or conduct transactions online related to their own student(s) (e.g. lunch information, fees and fines, sales, etc.) • Pilot year TBD
Actions Taken for Phase I • Pinnacle Internet Viewer installed on NISD servers • Pilot group (principals, academic deans, CITs, C & I and technology staff) met on February 17 and March 9 to determine: • grades and attendance management for teachers • management of parent accounts, parent notification and registration • site format / appearance • Product demonstrated for NEIC on March 1, Academics Committee on March 7, and Cabinet on March 8
Next Steps • Communicate procedures to teachers and administrators • Communicate / advertise to parents (e.g. direct mail, school website, District website, message on report card, school marquee, newsletters/e-mail, SAT, PTA, etc.) • Register parents; offer training • Monitor and assess pilot; prepare for fall expansion
