  5. Once your ASAP request is approved, we will issue your Username and Password to access ESSENCE in an email.

  6. 2. System’s requirements

  7. Internet Explorer v.6 (or later). • It can be found on your desktop or from Programs under your menu Start button or from the tool bar at the bottom. • High speed Internet to facilitate Map and Time Series viewing. • 1024 by 768 (or greater) screen resolution.

  9. To know which version of the browser you are using, open up an Internet Explorer page and click on Help, then click on About Internet Explorer. • Installation instructions are found at the address in previous slide. • Follow instructions accordingly.

  10. Note: For unconventional users, ESSENCE runs smoother in Firefox Mozilla due to the tab search feature.

  11. 4. Java Plug-in http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

  12. Without Java plug-in, users can only view the graphical displays. With Java plug-in, users can choose Graph options to edit the display or Save image.

  13. If you continue to have difficulty accessing ESSENCE, or begin to have difficulty after accessing ESSENCE successfully in the past, please contact your information technology services division (ITSD) to see if there is an issue with your network or PC security or other technical settings.

  14. Now…Let’s get started! • Please locate your username and password for ESSENCE. • Open your Internet Explorer Browser and enter the web address below. http://moessence.dhss.mo.gov/

  15. A security certificate webpage may appear – click ‘Continue to this website (not recommended)’. This page appears again when you delete the cookies in your browsing history.

  16. The Enter Network Password dialog box should appear – enter your user name and password (If you do not recall your username or password please email us ESSENCE@dhss.mo.gov or give us a direct call 573-522-8329).

  17. The ESSENCE homepage will appear. All of the major functions of the software are accessible using the main toolbar. Additionally, you will find two statement s of intent on this page: One is the privacy policy statement agreed by authorized ESSENCE users. The second is a legal and warranty statement from the system’s developer.

  18. This page also provides three essential pieces of information: 1) Date of current view, 2) Reporting status and last updated time stamp, and 3) AlertList and Cluster Detection. For instance, the Total Reporting Hospitals for Date 25 August 2009 indicate 85 out of 87 hospitals have loaded their data. Caution:Data are loaded hourly by ITSD. The Alert List and Cluster Detection may be displayed in the system before but they are not considered official until the system information table states it has been updated.

At top of the tool bar, you will find: 1) History of ESSENCE and its relationship to syndromic surveillance. 2) Syndrome and subsyndrome definitions. 3) Statistical methodology explained under Detector Algorithms. 4) Data Dictionary is a glossary of common ESSENCE terms. 5)Helpcontains an FAQ, additional background information, and useful links. Each of the application tabs above (e.g., Alert List, Event List, etc.) and those on the smaller tool bar (e.g., Bookmark Page, Create event, etc.) will be described later.

  20. We monitor and maintain the ESSENCE system daily and e-mail alerts will be sent if an unexpected outage occurs. The “Questions or Problems?” button automatically prompts you to send an e-mail to ESSENCE@dhss.mo.gov. Your inquiries and/or comments will be promptly replied.
