Birth/Childhood • Born on Christmas eve of 1167 • Born at Beaumont Palace, England • Youngest son of Henry II • Mother was Eleanor Aquitaine • Had three brothers • Brothers overshadowed him • One brother was Richard I • Favored by his father • Would receive no land • Got the nickname of “Lackland”

Early LifeWhat was Johns teenage life like? • Expected no inheritance • Older brothers became involved in rebellions against king Henry • Mother was imprisoned by Henry in 1173 • had an arranged wedding with Alais daughter of Humbert III • Then was given inheritance • now his father would give him castles in Normandy • John’s wife to be died before their wedding • Became ruler of Ireland • The people began to despise him • After 8 months left

King JohnWhat was he like and what did he do? • A King from England • Not a pleasant man • Promises never bothered him • Promised anything for money then would break it • He would steal from people • Put innocent people in jail • Put a man in jail to take his horse • Rumor states he killed his nephew • Took power of the monastery • Made every one leave

Heir to the throneHow did john receive the throne? • When King Richard died John was welcomed back into England • John was crowned the king on the 27th of may • Some wanted the son of Geoffrey to be the heir • Some wanted his nephew Arthur to be the heir • Arthur fought his uncle for the throne • The war between them upset the barons • John was summoned to the French Court • There he was questioned about the war • Was able to keep the throne

King RichardWhat was his famous brother like? • King John had three brothers • One of his brothers was Richard the 1 • Was also called King Richard the Lion heart • Born on September 8th 1157 • Born at Oxford, England • The third son of King Henry • Ruled from 1189 to1199 • Died 6th of April 1199 • Died in war • Buried in France

FatherWhat did King John’s father do? • King Johns father was King Henry II • Born March 5th 1133 • Married Eleanor at age of 19 • 1150-duke of Normandy • 1151-count of Anjou • 1152-duke of Aquitaine • 1154-king of England • Had four sons • Richard I drove Henry from the throne • Died 6th of July 1189

John’s CastleWhat was John’s castle like? • King John had a large castle • Built between 1200 and 1210 • Located in Limerick, Ireland • Next to the river Shannon • Walls were damaged in a siege for Limerick • Repaired and extended many times • Has massive corner towers • Originally a Viking camp • King John never set foot in his own castle • Still stands today

Magna CartaWhat led to the Magna carta? • The Archbishop died on the 13th of April 1205 • John then took his place • Banished all the monks • Kept all the wealth from the monastery • Also arrested two Nobles • Raised the taxes • The Nobles were angered • The Nobles gathered • Brought the king to Runnymede • Made John sign the Magna Carta

DeathHow did John die? • When the French attacked John retreated • King John took a route around • But his baggage train went strait through and was lost • That dwelt John a major blow • The loss effected his health and state of mind • Started to move from place to place • Until his last stop at Newark castle • He died on the 18th of October 1216 • He was buried at Worcester Cathedral • He was succeeded by his son

LegacyHow did people view him after he died? • King John was one of the most disastrous rulers in history • With military defeats • Civil wars occurring • Lost approval of the barons • Almost being forced out of power • And made him sign the Magna Carta • Yet some viewed him as an efficient ruler • Construction of medieval London Bridge • Always well informed • Often served in the court
