  3. Transformation of a Society • Agrarian society: • 65% of the workforce in 1800s to 3% in 2000 • Industrial age: • 45% of the workforce in 1900s to 22% in 2000 • Information age: • Driving engine for the 21st century

Performance in Health Care: Present Status • We have lot of work to do • We spend 14% -15% of GNP in healthcare in US as compared to 6% - 10% in most EU, GB, and Canada • We have the highest % uninsured among western nations (40 million) • One of the lowest life expectancy among western nations • One of the highest infant mortality rates

Healthcare System (Cont’d) • Hospital employment has doubled in 25 years • Use of RNs has increase 2.5 times in 25 years • Nurses still spend less than 20% time in Professional-Direct Care • About 1 Million Adverse Events in Hospitals • 44,000 - 98,000 deaths in hospitals due to Adverse Events • Turnaround time for meds : 3-4 hours • Turnaround time for lab tests:4-6 hours
