  1. Earth, Moon, and Sun Interactions

  2. The Moon • The moon completely revolves around Earth in 27.3 days • The near side of the moon always faces Earth

  3. Phases of The Moon • Phases are the different shapes of the moon that are visible from Earth • Caused by changes in the positions of the sun, Earth, and moon • Phases depend on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth

  4. MOON PHASES

  5. Tides • The tide is the rise and fall of water • Tides usually rise for 6 hours, then fall for 6 hours Why? • Gravity pulls the moon and Earth towards each other • Differences in how much the moon pulls on different parts of Earth's oceans make tides

  6. Eclipses • An eclipse occurs when an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, and casts a shadow on that object. • When the moon's shadow hits Earth or Earth's shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. • There are two types of eclipses: Solar eclipses and lunar eclipses. • solar=sun • lunar=moon

  7. Lunar and Solar Eclipses

  8. Solar Eclipses • a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and earth, and the moon fully or partially blocks the sun • Solar eclipses only occur at new moons • There are 4 types of Solar Eclipses -a total eclipse -a annular eclipse -a hybrid eclipse -a partial eclipse

  9. Lunar Eclipses • A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its umbra(shadow) • This can only occur when the sun, earth, and moon are alligned exactly with the earth in the middle. • A lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon • There are 2 types of lunar eclipses -partial lunar eclipse -total lunar eclipse

  10. Earth's Tilt and Revolution • Earth has 2 revolutions one around the sun and the other on its axis • When the earth revolves it will move closer or farther away from the sun each day • The earth rotates on its axis to the east • Speed of the rotation has many effects over years such as shape, climate, ocean depth currents and tectonic forces

  11. Earth's Tilt and Revolution • Earth is tilted on its axis 23.5 degrees causing seasons • Summer is created when the hemisphere is facing towards the sun and winter is caused when the hemisphere is facing away from the sun • When a hemisphere is tilted towards the sun it will have longer days and short nights and the other away around for the hemisphere tilted away from the sun • The equator has no seasons since the sun usually hits at the same angle everyday.
