  8. 1.Memorize according to thephonetic symbols音标andspelling rulesandword-building构词法 Can’t remember ①the spelling ②thesuffix/prefix e.g. attendance arrogance assistance

  9. 2.Separate the word into several parts (needs some imagination) Can’t remember suffix/prefix and long words E.g. anonymous=a-没有+-nonym名字+-ous →匿名的 hierarchy=hier高+-archy支配、统治→等级制度 crevice=cre-生长+-vice罪恶→裂缝

  10. Don’t know how to use a word Can’t remember the ①Chinese meaning. ②Fixed phrases: take on, take away, take off… 3. Remember the example sentences in the dictionary Or remember the passage in your textbook

  11. Can’t remember the Chinese meaning E.g. Sigh “唉” → 叹气 spring-mattress 席梦斯→弹簧床垫  Ambition 俺必胜→抱负,志气 Pest 拍死它→害虫 4.Associate the Chinese pronunciation with the word

  12. Can’t distinguish words with— ①close pronunciation ②close spelling ③close meaning 5.Put similar words together in your notebook

  13. Can’t remember different characteristics, suffix/prefix or Chinese meaning… E.g. identity n.→ identify v. 可以联想到已学的just变justify considerable 要想rather 6.Associate联想法 —— Based on old words

  14. 7.Memorize through reading Can’t remember seldom used words

  15. 8.Review over and over again (Ebbinghaus memory curve) Can’t keep a persistent memory
