Renewed Social Agenda Context 2006 EC announced stocktaking and to prepare Renewed Social Agenda 2007Public consultation was launched and published A communication on a new social vision for Europe in the 21st century was adopted based on EU stocktaking excercise 2008 Renewed social agenda was presented to European Parliament Council to adopt main conclusions in December

Policy instruments Lisbon Economic and employment performance: reduction of long term unemployment by 50% Strong political commitment at highest level Partnership approach: Member states, Commission, the Council of Ministers and European Parliament Clear quantifiable targets OMC social agenda Voluntary self evaluating process Agreed indicators, no targets Compared to Lisbon: lower rate of success OMC eradication of poverty adequate pensions equal access to health less

OMC Social Agenda Lisbon strategy: model for reinforcing OMC European Council conclusion 2005: OMC to interact closely with Lisbon, “feeding in” to growth and employment and Lisbon “feeding out” to social policies Setting targets OMC eradication of poverty, at-risk-poverty rates adequate pensions: minimum level of replacement income provided through public/private pensions health and long term care: increase in life expectancy, reduction in infant mortality
