Cycling Friends - what • Offer migrant women cycling experience • Buddy system • Introduction of an experienced cyclist and a 'new cyclist' to each other. • Go on cycling trips together • Benefits • Gains confidence in traffic • Pleasant and mobile activity • Intercultural exchange • Support by a local project team • organising an acquaintance moment • dusting off the participant's knowledge of the traffic rules • basic training on how to repair your own bike • organising a big cycling tour with a pick nick • …

Cycling Friends - why • Availability/Affordability • Asimple and cheap way of travelling. • Accessibility • Migrants and senior citizens experience most difficulties with cycling. • Acceptability • In Belgium, cycling is acquired during infancy • A lot of other cultures the bicycle is a toy or even forbidden (e.g. for women in Afghanistan) • Empowerment • Transport autonomy for women

  16. Cycling Friends - results • Leuven • The project is very successful. • The city integration services fully support the bicycle friends project. • 10 couples per year since 2008 • More and more cities start the project.

  17. Bambini - what • Increase the presence of soft mobility in the lives of small children • Motivate parents to use car-free mobility • Achieve internalisationof eco-friendly means of transport from early on.

Bambini - results • A set of toys focussing on sustainable modes of transport • Toolkit „Living and playing streets“ • Set of educational materials, templates and guidelines for pre-birth classes and their training centres • Set of educational materials, templates and guidelines for crèches and their training centres • Set of educational materials, templates and guidelines for kindergartens and their training centres • Material development for higher education and university sector

  20. Together on the move - what • Energy efficient transport training for low skilled immigrants • Together aims to • Enhance the quality of life of immigrants • Facilitate social inclusion • Conserve essential energy resources for future generations.

Save the Sidewalk - what • Campaign towards among citizens about the city's accessibility • Message: keep the sidewalk free of obstacles; no inconveniently parked bikes, cars or other objects. • Campaign materials and different kind of actions such as experience trail, street theatre moments, exhibition, photo contest, reward-action etc.

  24. Save the Sidewalk - why • Acceptability – non-discrimination • People need to be reminded about how important it is to keep the sidewalks free of obstacles • Accessibility • Makethe sidewalkssafe and accessible for all.

Save the Sidewalk - results • The first Save the Sidewalk campaign was introduced in 2008 and mainly tried to reach the students of Leuven. • Other Flemish cities like Antwerp, Ghent (2009) and Mechelen (2011) have also organised Save the Sidewalk actions. • Currently Leuven, Kortrijk and Waregem are participating in the campaign.

  26. Conclusion No matter who you target: • Listen to them • Don’t think you know what they think/need • Talk to them • Adapt your language, style • Work together • Use experts, local authorities, neighbours, ... • Coach • Good preperation • Use your experiences to influence policy makers
