  3. BEFORE AND AFTER: Two systems TRADITIONAL • B.C. = Before Christ • A.D. = Anno Domini • The Year of our Lord • NOTE: There is no year zero! • After December 31st, 1 B.C., the next day was January 1st, 1 C.E. • These mean the same thing! • So, why do we have two ways to say it? CONTEMPORARY • B.C.E. = Before Common Era • C.E. = Common Era

  4. OTHER CULTURES • Gregorian Calendar (Christian): • Based on birth of Jesus (around 1 C.E., although…) • Current Year = 2012 • New Year = January • Muslim Calendar: • Based on the year Muhammad arrived in Mecca (622) • Current Year = 1433 • New Year = November 15, 2012

  6. CENTURIES • A century = 100 years • We live in the 21st Century…why? • The first century C.E. goes from year 1 to year 100. That’s the first 100 years of the Common Era. • The second century C.E. goes from year 101 to year 200. The second 100 years. • …and so forth

  7. CENTURIES PRACTICE • Make two columns (years on left; century on right) • Write the correct years or correct century to match. • 1934 • 1401-1500 • 1776 • 1201-1300 • 323 B.C.E • 20th Century • 15th Century • 18th Century • 13th Century • 4th Century B.C.E.
