  1. 8.3 Properties of Acids and Bases • Acid- a compound that produces hydronium ions (H3O) when dissolved in water. Examples: vinegar, carbonated drinks, stomach juices, fertilizers, car batteries

  2. Properties of Acids • Sour Taste – citrus fruits • Reactivity with metals – Lab • Color Changes in Indicators – blue litmus paper turns red.

  3. Properties of Bases • Base – compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH) when dissolved in water. Examples- deodorants, antacids, concrete, plaster, laxative, drain cleaners, soap

  4. Properties of Bases • Bitters Taste –unsweetened chocolate, cough syrup • Slippery Feel – soap, cleaning products, wet rocks • Color Changes in Indicators – red litmus paper turns blue

  5. Neutralization • Reaction between an acid and a base produces a salt and water.

  6. 8.4 Strength of Acids and Bases • pH Scale – a number scale from 0 to 14 to describe the concentration of Hydronium ions in a solution

  7. Lower the pH-more acidic Higher the pH-more basic
