  1. Association of Universities of the Amazonia Technology and Distance Education for Sustainable Development of the Amazonia Dr. Alexandre Rivas (UA/CCA) Dr. Norbert Fenzl (UFPA/NUMA) Dr. Armin Mathis (UFPA/NAEA) Dr. José Alberto Machado (UA/FES) Dr. Carlos Edwar Freitas (UA/FCA)Dr.Luis Aragon (UFPA/NAEA)

  2. Coordinating Institution:The University of Amazonas Executive Institutions:The University of Amazonas(CCA, FES) Federal University of Pará (NAEA, NUMA) National Universityof Colombia (IMANI) Universidad René G. Moreno, Bolívia (CIMAR) Universidad Central de Venezuela (CENAMB) Partners: Rede Amazônica Foundation ISAE/FGV

  3. Justification UNAMAZ - the only cooperation network between Amazonian universities - is assuming a leading role in programs for human resources formation and researches aiming at unifying its members’ common objectives.

  4. General Objective Pilot program for human resources formation and research capacitation and for intervention focusing on operational features for sustainable development, supported by the most advanced technologies.

  5. Specific Objectives • Creation of a a physical network of high transmission capacity, linking all members of UNAMAZ and linking the Amazônia with the world. • Use of the physical network of high transmission capacity to connect UNAMAZ university hospitals in a telemedicine program. • Creation of a supporting logistic infrastructure to manage the newly installed technologies (hard- and software).

  6. Specific Objectives(being defined) • Creation of a wide range teaching program and its transformation into a long distance teaching network (virtual university) executed for and by UNAMAZ universities. • Creation of a research program connected to the teaching program, for designing operational features for sustainable development processes in Amazônia. • Formation of non-academic human resources (NGO’s, government institutions, companies, etc.) qualifying them to lead sustainable development process implementation in the Panamazonian countries.

  7. General Structure of the Program Part A: Material Base Sub-program I: Creation of the material structure of the network Sub-program II: Creation of a logistic supporting infra-structure to maintain the material structure of the network and to create the educational software for distance education. Sub-program III: Telemedicine for Amazônia Implantation of an inter-institutional telemedicine program for UNAMAZ university hospitals.

  8. General Structure of the Program Part B: The programmatic content(being defined) • Sub-program IV: Operational Aspects of Sustainable Development in Amazonian Countries. • Sub-program V: Implementation of graduate programs.

  9. Sub-program I: Creation of a physical network structure Objectives To create a wide band communication infrastructure, eliminating barriers (narrow band links ) which impair audio-visual data transmission between UNAMAZ hospitals and universities. • Create small local networks in the universities already connected to the Internet to enhance short and medium pilot courses on long distance teaching of sustainable development, based on the new wide band structure.

  10. Sub-program II: Creation of a logistic supporting structure for networkd maintenance and creation of educational software Objectives • Creation of the Physical Network Management Team • Creation of a Management Team for Educational Software Development

  11. Sub-program III: Telemedicine for Amazônia Objectives • Create the communication infra-structure in wide band (Amazonian backbone) capable of to transmit data which can be used for telemedicinal purposes by university hospitals. • Create local networks in university hospitals which are already connected to the internet. • Train human resources for the use of technologies applied in telehealth and Telemedicine in university hospitals. • Develop specific software for the needs of university hospitals Develop programs to improve the quality of hospital services in Amazônia.

  12. Sub-programa IV: Operational Features for Sustainable Development in Pan-Amazonian Countries(being defined) Objectives • Implementation of an institutional human resources formation program • Implementation of an inter-institutional extension program. • Implementation of an inter-institutional research program.

  13. Sub-program V: Inter-Institutional Post-graduate Program Stricto Sensu for Amazônia (being defined).

  14. Practical Step 1: • To build a standart unit • To develop contents • Human resources training • Simultaneously: • To make broadband feasible • Fund raise for the short and long term • Human resources training

  15. Practical Step 2: • To replicate the standart unit Practical Step 3 … n : • Simultaneously: • To make broadband feasible • Fund raise for the short and long term • Human resources training
