What is career mentoring? “Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be.” Eric Parsloe Unique, relationship evolving over time A process Reciprocal and asymmetrical re benefits and power Focused on development of the mentee

  5. Task group aims Facilitate the regional, national and international sharing of best practice and innovation by members to enhance career mentoring service provision. [Quality] Provide a source of recognised expertise and resources in relation to career mentoring in HE. [Advocacy] Provide a structured means of developing the skills and knowledge of all career mentoring scheme staff. [Learning] Lead on building an evidence base of mentoring best practice, outcomes, impact and value. [Research and Knowledge] Build the professional standing of staff managing mentoring schemes, through increasing the visibility of the importance and impact of career mentoring, and creating a unified voice for members. [Community]

  7. What we’ve done so far… Survey successfully undertaken during the autumn as a precursor to creating a career mentoring map of HE. Platform decided on and structure of career mentoring resource bank created Start is being made over spring/summer 2019 to populate it. Planned conference July 2019 A LinkedIn group has been set up for the Task Group and AGCAS members and will replace the email network after an overlap whilst members move across.

  8. What we are doing next… Run AGCAS Career Mentoring in HE Conference in July 2019 Creation / publication of scheme map Adding to and publishing online resource bank Design and development of a one day training course for 2020

Survey highlights! • 66 HEIs across UK and Ireland completed the survey • The survey represented up to 8,400 mentoring partnerships • Identified over 100 staff involved in running schemes • 5 main themes were covered: • Institution details • Programme details • Training and feedback • Staffing levels • Professional development
