  1. Global Precipitation Measurement Mission Developed by the GPM Education and Communications Team NASA/GSFC- August 2014 For use by GPM Teachers for Middle School students Welcome to GPM- Help us with a NASA mission!

  2. Welcome aboard! • Your teacher has been selected to help NASA improve some of the educational materials that they make for students around the world. • You will get to learn more about what NASA does, and how it uses science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to learn about our world and our universe. • This presentation was developed by NASA Education Specialists to invite you aboard, and to tell you a little bit about the NASA mission that you will be helping this school year.

  3. What does NASA do?

  4. NASA is also studying this planet-

  5. What is water? So, what is water anyway? Where did Earth get its water from? Can we make more water if we need to?

  6. How much water is on Earth’s surface?

  7. Saltwater versus Freshwater

  8. Freshwater is a precious resource. http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/earthwherewater.html

  9. Where is all the water on Earth?

  10. Uses of Freshwater in USA

  11. The Big Picture The Freshwater Connection Link to GPM movie

  12. Earth’s Water Cycle

  13. NASA studies Earth’s Water Cycle How does NASA study Earth’s water cycle? “The Water Cycle- Featuring Molecule Man”

  14. Precipitation • What is “precipitation”? • Why is precipitation important to life on Earth? • Do we have enough precipitation on Earth? • How can we know how much precipitation is falling?

  15. “For Good Measure” • In this short video, we will learn how NASA is going to help us measure how much precipitation falls on Earth every few hours. • Can you imagine how we can measure precipitation from above the clouds? • Why do we need to measure precipitation from above the clouds? • Let’s learn the answers to these questions in this video: http://pmm.nasa.gov/education/videos/for-good-measure

  16. The GPM Core Observatory satellite

  17. How will you be involved? • Every month, your teacher will get a few new NASA educational resources that are related to the work that the GPM mission is doing. • Your teacher will share the resources with you, and will get your opinion about how well the resource worked to teach you about the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics behind this mission. • Your teacher will report back to us with your reactions and your advice. • We will improve our educational resources using your feedback!
