  1. How On Earth Do We Get Those eTwinning Teachers Connected?Work Package 3Sibren Fetter, Adriana Berlanga & Peter SloepCELSTEC, Open University of the Netherlands

  2. Overview • The eTwinning Network • Work Package 3 Goals • Our Research • Expected Effects • Initial Design • Conclusions • Next Steps

  3. The eTwinning Network

  4. Work Package 3 Goals • 3.1 Analyze the major trends within the eTwinning social network • What are the characteristics of the eTwinning network? • How do people use the network • How do people perceive the network? • 3.2 What drives or stops people from using the network? • Where does it go right? • Where does it go wrong? • What would improve the network? • What are we going to do about it?

  5. Our Literature Review • We identified 3 problems common for social network sites • High dependancy on a small core group of users • Low feeling of sense of belonging to the community • Little mutual support

  6. But What Now?! • Don’t dispair! • Find out about the network • Make plans • Do something about it • Get people connected • make them feel at home • let them help each other eTwinning has started already with the eTwinning Groups

  7. Our Research • From an early stage on people need to help each other • And to get from to • We propose to use Ad Hoc Transient Communities

  8. Ad Hoc Transient Communities (AHTCs) Communication Environment

  9. Finding the Right Person • Availability • Number of answers given compared to average number of answers given in the network • Content Competency • Question category = Teaching subject category • Similarity • Correlation between teaching subjects • Language • Needs to be the same language

  10. Expected effects AHTC • Decentralized network • Higher sense of belonging to the community • Increased mutual support

  11. Conclusions (1) • The eTwinning Network works • We need to find out what makes the network tick • We need to find out what stops the network from ticking • Our research problems seem a good place to start • We believe AHTCs can play an important role in enhancing the eTwinning network

  12. Conclusions (2) • AHTCs: • Participants are brought together for a specific request (Ad Hoc) • Once a request is fulfilled the AHTC disappears (Transience) • Easy to use and little time investment • Everyone can use them from the beginning • Results: • + More and spread out of relationships • + Higher sense of belonging to the community • + Increase in Mutual support

  13. Next Steps • Assess the state of the eTwinning Network using social network analysis and surveys (RWTH + OUNL) • Use these findings as a base for future scenarios (JRC + OUNL) • Run simulations in Netlogo and if neccessary adjust our model • Building a prototype (EUN + OUNL) • Implement and test within the eTwinning Groups (EUN + OUNL) • And maybe some help from RWTH for the SNA?

  14. Let’s Get Started! Questions?
