Who is ESFI? • ESFI Is the premier not-for-profitorganization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety at home and in the workplace. • Founded in 1994 as a cooperative effort by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), • ESFI’s mission is to reduce electrically-related injuries, deaths and fires; saving lives and property through public education and outreach.

  5. 2019 National Electrical Safety Month • Key Drivers: • 43.4% of Workplace Fatalities involved Overhead Powerlines between 2011 – 2017 • Construction industry accounts for the majority of fatal electrical injuries • 64% of those killed in fatal electrical injuries are in non-electrical occupations

  6. New ESFI Initiatives • ESFI is introducing new workplace safety resources to reduce number of workplace electrical injuries • Materials are based on data collected by OSHA and BLS • Between 2003 and 2017, there was an average of 186 fatal workplace electrical injuries a year

New ESFI Initiatives • Surveys: • ESFI Consumer Knowledge and Sentiment • Among the general population, the vast majority (81%) are slightly or not at all familiar with the National Electrical Code. • People rarely engage an electrician to inspect their homes unless required to or as the result of a specific electrical problem (47%). • Utilities (38%) and word-of-mouth (33%) serve as the top sources people use to learn about electrical safety, and utilities are considered the most trustworthy information providers. • Utility Copper theft • In 2008 ESFI surveyed 618 electric utilities on the issue of copper theft • 18,400 individual copper theft incidents with $22M repair cost • Wild Fire Prevention Survey
