Sustainability • 8th-grade social studies ~ curriculum is built with service learning opportunities in mind: Africa Project • Project-based learning: BIE • Students make connections to real world problems • Presentation Piece ~ accountability, sharing findings, making connections, moving students to act... Helping America Help Africa is born
After the Project ~ • Student assessment/ self and peer with interest opportunity/ideas • Meeting for the “Africa Committee” planned (32 students interested) • Helping America Help Africa is born with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS, hunger and academics • Executive Board is elected by group • Raising funds begins: News Article Online
Unexpected Outcome~ Partnerships • Micro level of students working toward a common goal • Leaders learn to lead and motivate • Anxious members learn to focus attention on one project at a time, follow through to completion, celebrate accomplishments • Reaching out to community ~ home/parent support, sharing mission at bake sale, with Greendale Patch reporter
Next Steps ~ Educate Others on Issues • Students are anxious to spread their knowledge with others ~ some ideas: • Elementary students: assembly with digital presentation and interactive stations demonstrating challenges the people of African countries face • Public: through a “Walk for Africa” • Stand at village celebrations ~ and beyond through high school
