  3. Western Territory • The French Threat • In 1802 the Spanish stopped allowing trade in New Orleans • They had secretly given the Louisiana Terr. To the French • At the least it stopped our trade at the port of New Orleans • At worst Napoleon wanted to expand his empire into North America • Jefferson sent Robert Livingston to buy New Orleans for up to $10,000,000

Western Territory • Revolt in Santo Domingo • Inspired by the French Revolution the slaves of the island revolted against France • Toussaint-Louverture led the rebels • Napoleon captured Toussaint, but never gained control of the island • With out the island as a naval base Napoleon didn’t think he could control a North American empire

  6. The Nation Expands • Lewis and Clark • Jefferson wanted to know about Louisiana for science • Congress ok’d the expedition for commercial and military purposes • Meriwether Lewis, 28 yr old with military experience, an amateur scientist, and had dealt with the Native Americans before • William Clark, 32 yr old friend of Lewis also an amateur scientist, and had dealt with the Native Americans before

  7. The Nation Expands • Lewis and Clark • They also chose river men, gunsmiths, carpenters, scouts, a cook, 2 Native American/ French men, and a African-American • Started in St. Louis • Almost 4,000 miles • Sacagawea agreed to guide them • Brought back valuable info • Most importantly inspire the country to move westward

  8. The Nation Expands • Pike’s Expedition • Sent out after Lewis and Clark returned • 1st trip to the upper Mississippi R. • 2nd trip to the west, Colorado (Pike’s Peak), New Mexico, Mexico, and Texas • Captured by the Spanish and later released

  9. The Nation Expands • Federalist’s Plan to Secede • The Louisiana Purchase make nervous about losing power • The new territory was mostly farmland so they feared it would be republican • A group from Mass. Planned to create a Northern Confederacy in New England • They needed NY to succeed • They focused on Burr who had left the Republicans after The Pres. Election of 1800 • The Rep. supported him for Gov. of NY in 1804

  10. The Nation Expands • Burr and Hamilton • Hamilton accused Burr of treason • When Burr loses the election he challenges Hamilton to a duel • Hamilton dies of his wound the next day • Burr fled to the west to avoid being arrested
