  1. Topic 1.5 EJECTION SEAT IDENTIFICATION

  2. Enabling Objective(s): 1.9 IDENTIFY Ejection Seats commonly used aboard ship as described in NATOPS, U.S. Navy Aircraft Emergency Rescue Information Manual, NAVAIR 00-80R-14-1, current series. (CTTL 1.2)

  3. NOTE: EJECTION SEATS ARE PRESENTLY MANUFACTURE BY A NUMBER OF COMPANIES IN THE UNITED STATE AND ABROAD. EACH OF THESE COMPANIES HAVE DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED EJECTION SEATS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF A VARIETY OF AIRCRAFT CONFIGURATIONS AND MILITARY REQUIREMENTS. THEREFORE, NUMEROUS MODELS OF THEIR EJECTION SEATS ARE INCORPORATED INTO THE SYSTEM.

  4. Martin Baker MK GRU-7A Ejection Seat • Rocket assisted ejection seat used in the F‑14 aircraft. • Provides a means of fast, safe escape during emergency flight conditions. • Permits safe seat ejection at ground level, at zero airspeed as well as during emergency flight conditions.

  5. WARNING: EJECTION SEATS PRESENT DEFINITE HAZARDS WHICH MAY CAUSE FATAL INJURIES TO UNINFORMED AND CARELESS PERSONNEL.

  6. WARNING: IN MULTI-SEAT AIRCRAFT, ALL EJECTION SEATS MUST BE SAFETIED DUE TO COMMAND EJECTION POSSIBILITY. WHEN REMOVING PERSONNEL FROM EJECTION SEATS, DO NOT ALLOW CREWMEMBERS OR RESCUE PERSONNEL TO BECOME ENTANGLED IN LOWER EJECTION HANDLE OR USE FACE CURTAIN HANDLE AS A SUPPORT OR HAND HOLD.

  7. Martin Baker MK GRU-7A Ejection Seat (CONT). • Emergency Ejection Seat Safetying ‑ The Martin Baker MK GRU-7A ejection seat presents special hazards to rescue personnel. Safetying the entire seat under emergency conditions may not be feasible. To temporarily render seat safe for the removal of disabled crewmembers:

  8. Martin Baker MK GRU-7A Ejection Seat (CONT). • PLACE Safety Flag for Face Curtain in UP/LOCKED position. • ROTATE Lower Firing Handle Guard to UP/LOCKED position. • INSERT Ejection Gun Safety Pin into Ejection Gun Sear.

  9. Martin Baker GRUEA-7 • Rocket assisted ejection seat used in the EA-6B. • Provides a means of fast, safe escape during emergency flight conditions. • Permits ejection at ground level, at zero airspeed as well as during emergency flight conditions. • The Martin Baker GRUEA-7 ejection seat presents special hazards to rescue personnel. Safetying the entire seat under emergency conditions may not be feasible. To temporarily render seat safe for the removal of disabled crewmembers:

  10. Martin Baker GRUEA-7 (CONT). • PLACE Face Curtain Safety Flag in UP/LOCKED position. • ROTATE alternate firing handle lock to the UP/LOCKED (vertical) position and INSERT Lower Ejection Handle safety pin. • INSERT safety pin into ejection seat gun sear.

  11. Martin Baker SJU-17 (v) 3/A, 4/A Ejection Seat • Rocket assisted ejection seat used in the F-14D. • Provides a means of fast, safe escape during emergency flight conditions. • Permits safe seat ejection at ground level, at zero airspeed as well as during emergency flight conditions. • The Martin Baker SJU-17 (V) 3/A, and 4/A ejection seats present special hazards to rescue personnel. Safetying the entire seat under emergency conditions may not be feasible. To temporarily render the seat safe for the removal of disabled crewmembers:

  12. Martin Baker SJU-17 (v) 3/A, 4/A Ejection Seat • Locate, PUSH BUTTON, and ROTATE the EMERGENCY RESTRAINT RELEASE (MOR) HANDLE upward ensuring that it is fully seated, this will safe the seat and disengage the crewmember from the restraint system. For ease of removal of the crewmember, if accessible, disconnect the lower Koch fittings from the crewmember. This will prevent removal of the seat survival kit when extracting the crewmember.

  13. Martin Baker SJU-17 (v) 3/A, 4/A Ejection Seat • If the MOR is not visible or accessible, PULL the SAFE/ARMED handle upward ensuring that it is fully seated and the word SAFE is visible. UNFASTEN both the upper and lower Koch fittings and remove crewmember.

  14. Martin Baker SJU-5/A, 6/A Ejection Seat • A rocket assisted ejection seat used in the F/A-18A/B/C/D aircraft. • Provides a means of fast, safe escape during emergency flight conditions. • Permits safe seat ejection at ground level, at zero airspeed as well as during emergency flight conditions. • Ejection Seat Safetying (Normal/Emergency) - Immediately upon gaining access to the aircraft cockpit, if time permits and no hazardous conditions exist, proceed with seat safetying procedures.

  15. WARNING: IF EJECTION CONTROL HANDLE IS NOT FULLY SEATED, SAFETY PIN CANNOT BE ROTATED TO THE FULLY LOCKED POSITION. AN UNSAFE SEAT EXISTS IF THE ENTIRE WORD "SAFE" IS NOT VISIBLE ON THE SAFE/ARMED HANDLE. IF EJECTION SEAT IS NOT IN A SAFE CONDITION, INITIATION MAY OCCUR IF EJECTION CONTROL HANDLE IS PULLED. PROPER PROCEDURES FOR RESETTING HANDLE MUST BE FOLLOWED.

  16. Martin Baker SJU-5/A, 6/A Ejection Seat • INSERT Safety Pin into Ejection Control Handle if handle is in First Detent (stowed) position. If Ejection Control Handle is not in stowed position, RETURN handle to First Detent (stowed position) by PRESSING handle into its housing and INSERTING safety pin. • PRESS button on top of Manual Override Handle and ROTATE handle UP and AFT. The Safe/Armed handle will simultaneously rotate up and the ENTIRE word "SAFE" should be visible.

  17. WARNING: IN MULTI-SEAT AIRCRAFT, ALL EJECTION SEATS MUST BE SAFETIED DUE TO COMMAND EJECTION.

  18. Martin Baker SJU-17(V) 1/A, 2/A Ejection Seat • Rocket assisted ejection seat used in the F/A-18C/D. • Provides a means of fast, safe escape during emergency flight conditions. • Permits safe seat ejection at ground level, at zero airspeed as well as during emergency flight conditions. • Ejection Seat Safetying (Normal/Emergency) - Immediately upon gaining access to the aircraft cockpit, if time permits and no hazardous conditions exits, proceed with seat safetying procedures.

  19. WARNING: IF EJECTION CONTROL HANDLE IS NOT FULLY SEATED, SAFETY PIN CANNOT BE ROTATED TO THE FULLY LOCKED POSITION. AN UNSAFE SEAT EXISTS IF THE ENTIRE WORK “SAFE” IS NOT VISIBLE ON THE SAFE/ARMED HANDLE. IF EJECTION SEAT IS NOT IN A SAFE CONDITION INITIATION MAY OCCUR IF EJECTION CONTROL HANDLE IS PULLED. PROPER PROCEDURES FOR RESETTING HANDLE MUST BE FOLLOWED.
