  1. CSP – Empowering the World with Solar Energy Climate Parliament Forum Dr. Henner Gladen, Advisor to the Executive Board Brussels | 26 May, 2011

  2. Experts for Solar Power • Solar Millennium AG • is a successful pioneer with a long track-record thanks to the early entryinto the market (1998) • is focused on development of renewable energy technologies and specialized on the realization of CSP plants • developed the first parabolic trough power plants in Europe (Andasol), the first modern parabolic trough solar field of Egypt and started construction of Blythe (California), world’s largest solar power plant (received conditional commitment in April 2011) • is a founding member of the Dii and since a long time involved in the development of renewable energies in the MENA region

  3. Worldwide activities of Solar Millennium (Selection) Andasol 1-3 (3 x 50 MWe) Ibersol (1 x 50 MWe) Arenales (1 x 50 MWe) DNI ~ 2,150 kWh/a Blythe (4 x 250 MWe) DNI ~ 2,600 kWh/a USA Asia MENA Solar Millennium sites Kuraymat (1 x 61 MWth) DNI ~ 2,400 kWh/a Possible future markets

  4. Proven technology: parabolic troughs • The solar radiation is concentrated onto an absorber tube, situated at the focal line of the trough, and transferred into heat which is used to operate a steam turbine generating electricity. • Commercially operated plants in California since 1984 have generated revenues of roughly US-$ 3 billion. • Parabolic trough power plants can be operated as pure solar power plants or in hybrid systems, with wet or dry cooling, depending on local needs. • Dispatchability: integration of thermal storage allow electricity production even after sunset Technology

  5. CSP provides supply stability Typical demand for electricity in sunny countries • CSP the only commercially available renewable energy which contributes to security of supply and grid stability • Can cover specific load curves and peak/average loads using storage units • Is complementary to photovoltaics and wind

  6. Ideal for intermediate and peak load: electricity demand Spain Peak record19 July Juli 2010 1:26 pm 41.318 MW per hour

  7. Future challenges: one solution – CSP Concentrating Solar Power Optional: Thermal Storage Sea Water Desalination Waste Heat Thermal Heat Grid stability Water Steam Steam Turbine Absorption Refrigerator Cooling Electricity Building Air Conditioner

  8. Proven and flexible Technology

  9. Hybrid power plant Kuraymat: first reference project in Egypt Kuraymat (Egypt), 150 MWe ISCC plant including 61 MWth • Operation of the solar field began at the end of 2010 • Total investment: € 250 million, approx. 30% for the 130,000 m² solar field • Engineering, supervision and supply of key components for the solar field • After start of operations, Flagsol and Orascom will operate the solar part of the power plant for two years before ultimately handing it over to the owner NREA

  10. Local added value created by Kuraymat project • Local sourcing for parabolic trough collector steel structure • Local assembly of collectors • Local assembly of the solar field  about 60 percent of the value for the solar field was generated locally • Pipe works and wiring of the solar field • Civil Works • Solar Millennium developed its market strategy to a win-win-situation through cooperating closely with regional partners (e.g. Orascom) • Thus creating local jobs with positive social and economic effects especially to economically weak regions.

  11. NEXT: Ouarzazate - in the race for a tender • Morocco is about 97 percent dependent on energy imports • Plan Solaire Marocain: construction of solar power plants with a total capacity of 2,000 MW by 2020, 14% of the total electricity capacity by 2020 • The consortium with Orascom Construction Industries, Evonik Steag GmbH and  Solar Millennium AG is one of four bidding consortia to be pre-qualified for the first tender phase by MASEN, a 125-160 MW Parabolic Through Solar Plant with Thermal Storage at Ouarzazate

  12. 3x50 MW = 150 MW Total financing volume approx. EUR 1bn Solar power for more than half a million people Andasol 3: start of operation expect. in summer 2011; Co-investors: Stadtwerke München (Munich City Utilities), RWE Innogy, Rhein Energie, Ferrostaal the first parabolic trough power plant in Europe working with thermal storage Regulation Feed-in compensation for CSP definitively guaranteed by Spanish RD #661 (May 2007) CSP incl. thermal storage: Andasol 1-3 Andasol 1 Andasol 2 Andasol 3

  13. CSP without storage, with dry cooling: Blythe • Blythe, California: 1 Gigawatt (1GW) • The world’s largest solar power plant • solar power for more than 300,000 US households • Construction on Blythe 1 - 2 (2 x 250 MW) started, received Conditional Commitment in April 2011 • Blythe 1 - 4: 1,120 loops* 179,200 absorber pipes 2.15 million mirrors 192,000 tons of steel 2,240 hectares of land • more than 1,000 jobs, more than 1 million tons of CO2 emissions saved p.a. • Solar Millennium US projects (2 GW in California and Nevada) will feature dry coolingtechnologythat uses 90% less water than water-cooled design * HelioTrough technology

  14. Improved efficiency: HelioTrough • HelioTrough – the most innovative* collector design of the CSP industry is the result of continuous R&D activities within the Solar Millennium Group • After SkalET, HelioTrough is the second collector generation developed by technology subsidiary Flagsol together with its partners • Larger dimensions and more efficient assembling to reduce costs substantially • Improving competitiveness • Test loop in permanent operation in commercial power plant in Southwest USA since November 2009 • Implementation into Solar Millennium’s solar power plants in California and Nevada planned *Awarded CSP innovation prize at 2010 CSPtoday Conference in San Francisco

  15. Thank you for your attention!
