Two main ICT tools: Facebook and Moodle • 5. Two Influencial factors: Gender and Professional Discipline • 6. ICT's Impact on learners • 7. The Prospect of ICT-based Education • 8. Thank you

  3. The Development of Online Education • First, “Internet is perceived as “the outgrowth of US Defense Department work and popular enthusiasts” (Guice, 1998). • In 1969, the defense department came out with ARPA, which was used to defense universities. • In1991, National Research and Engineering network (NREN) was built, which focus on business, university students, and technical professionals.

  6. ICT Apply to Education • Recent years, most developed countries such as Canada and USA has spent much money on improving the situation of using ICT in education (Dewitt, Naimie, & Siraj, 2013). • Some ICT tools such as Blog, Moodle, and Facebook have been widely adopted (Batista et al, 2015) • Facebook and Moodle are two main popular ICT tools for undergraduate teachers and students (Batista et al. 2015; Petrovic et al., 2014). Figure 1.Internet Services used at Home by KZA Families with School-aged Children (Lockhart et al, 2013).

  7. The advantages of using ICT in education 2.Using ICT to optimize students skills for social interaction and 1. Enrich teaching activities and enhance studetns interests in self-directed participation 3. Improving teaching quality and provide long distance educaiton 4.Educators and students can have links or connection to each other through using ICT C A B D

  8. The advantages of using ICT in education • There are some other advantages: • Can repeat teaching and learning again and again • Special facilities for pupils with disabilities • ICT provides links with other schools or with business • Computers in schools provides wider access to ICT • Giving teachers greater insight and more time

  9. Facebook in Education • 1. “Facebook has a great popularity among higher education students” ( Batista et al., 2015). • 2. Students are more good at using Facebook than educators. • 3. Facebook can be accessed into by diverse mobile devices. • 4. “Facebook gives a great easiness of creating groups and it allows us to manage and control access to the classroom which it is very helpful for professors” (Batista et al., 2015). • 5. Students can share their resources and ideas any time and any where. • 6. “Facebook can strengthens the communication between students -students and students-professors” ( Batista et al., 2015).

  10. Facebook for Education Immediacy availability collaboratively familiarity • The characteristics of Facebook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrpx7qr6Ftc accessibility communicability

  11. Moodle in Education • Moodle is a kind of learning management system which can access into freely. • Moodle is used for blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other e-learning projects in schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors. • Moodle as one of the most popular ICT tools has been proved that it can driving online teaching and learning

  12. Moodle in Education Enhancing the quality of teaching and learning (Amandu et al., 2013; Petrovic et al.,2014) Providing diverse teaching and learning materials Helping educators supply more diverse learning activities • Some researchers concluded some advantages of using moodle in undergraduate education: Improving students interest in learning and promote better academic performance Fostering collaboration by supporting group learning

  13. Comparison between Facebook and Moodle Figure 2. Comparative Marks for Variables with Statistically Significant Differences for Facebook and Moodle (Petrovic et al., 2014, p. 122). Figure 3 Comparative Marks for Variables with Statistically Significant Differences for Facebook and Moodle (Petrovic et al., 2014, p. 122).

  14. Conclusion • Facebook and Moodle are two important ICT tools for online education. More importantly, Moodle is more suitable for teaching and learning whereas Facebook is more acceptable for a large number of students.

  15. Gender • According to the research, female educators prefer to use ICT in their classrooms (Mbuva, 2014; Radovic-Markovic 2010). • There is an increasingly number of female educators feel that ICT-based education is more convenient and comfortable. • Many universities provide more supports for female instructors.

  16. Professional Displines • ICT has different influences on educators who teach different professional displines. • ICT is more helpful for those educators who teach engineering and science, and these educators can use high technologies skillfully (Petrovic et al.,2014; Marcelo, Yot, & Mayor, 2015).

  17. ICT's Impact on Learners • Modern students as digital natives are more good at using hihg technology on school campuses (Batista et al.,2015; Dewitt, Naimie, & Siraj, 2013; Lukas, 2014). • Nearly 100% students know how to use ICT tools. • ICT-based education can promote higher acedemic performance (Amandu et al., 2013; Lukas, 2014; Sari, 2014). • ICT also can strengthen students capabilities such as critical thinking, writing and understanding, and technologies enable students learn more knowledge which they are unable to learn from books.

  18. ICT's Impact on Learners Figure 4. Course participation in both situations (traditional and e-learning) (Benta, Bologa, & Dzitac, 2014).

  19. The Prospect of ICT-based Education • More and more universities invest more money to introduce more high technologies and ICT to students and educators. • Online education or ICT-based education has become a trend in the near future. • There is an increasingly number of students are willing to use ICT in the classroom because they enjoy using mobile devices in their daily life (Lukas, 2014). • More and more educational institutions look forward to use ICT Sari,2014; Lukas, 2014).

  20. Questions: • 1. Comparison to the traditional education, what aspects does online education should be improved? • 2. According to our experience in TRU, how can we use ICT to improve our academic performance?

  21. Thank you !
