  1. Vocabulary Hierarchy – the ranking of those in authority Bishops: successors of the Apostles Diocese – geographical area governed by a bishop

  2. Archdiocese: A large metropolitan diocese, governed by a main bishop who is assisted by other bishops. Archbishop: The bishop of an archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop: An assisting Bishop in a Diocese or Archdiocese. Pastor: Latin word for Shepherd

  3. Cardinal – An honorary title given to laymen, deacons, priests, or bishops. They elect the Pope and they help assist the Pope in day to day governance of the Church. Curia – consists of the administrative and judicial offices by which the Pope directs the Church.

  4. Monsignor: honorary title given to priests Doctrine: Any truth taught by the Church as necessary for acceptance by the faithful. Dogma: A doctrine that is formally defined or declared. Ex Cathedra: “From the Chair”

  5. Ecumenical Council: A universal and formal gathering of all the bishops with the Pope, for the purpose of discussing and regulating matters of Church doctrine and discipline. Magisterium: The Teaching office of the Church Extraordinary Magisterium: refers to the solemn and formal exercise of the teaching office of the Pope and the Bishops.

  6. Ordinary Magisterium: regular exercise of the Church’s teaching office Creeds: statements of belief of the Church Development of Doctrine: the gradual deeper understanding of the truths of faith Christ revealed to the Church.
