  1. Chemistry projects & presentations 4th 9 Weeks final

  2. overview • The purpose of this project is for you to apply your knowledge of chemistry onto real life applications • This project can include the different units that were covered throughout this year in chemistry • This project will also put your research, organizational, and presentation skills to the test • Team/group effort will be used to complete this project

  3. Overall requirements • Project will be completed in teams / groups (size of teams depends on the class size) • Chemistry topic will be researched by each team to create a final product that will be presented to the class (this will be your final exam grade) • Final product can be a PowerPoint presentation, Prezi presentation, a video, or a poster • There are pre-determined topics that teams will choose from (if a team would like to research on a topic that is not part of this list, please let me know what topic you would like to work on and I will decide if it is suitable for the project) • Class presentations will take place during the last week of school depending on the class size and the amount of time needed for the presentations • ALL team members must be part of the project and final presentation to the class

  5. PowerPoint / Prezi presentations • Title of presentation and/or topic • Team member introductions • Scope • Research findings • Conclusion • References / Works cited • Quiz (five questions)

PowerPoint / Prezi presentations • Presentation needs to be at least 7 minutes long and not longer than 10 minutes (this includes the 5 question quiz that will be given to the class). • Include pictures regarding your topic and any other visual aids that you may think are important • The five question quiz at the end of the presentation needs to be given to the class and papers need to be graded by the team before they are given to me • Copy of the presentation needs to be given to me (if you do a Prezi, make sure you give me a link to the presentation and make it public!) • Be creative and make the presentation interesting!!

  7. video • Video needs to be at least 5 minutes long and not longer than 10 minutes (this includes the 5 question quiz that will be given to the class) • All team members must be part of the video • Requirements for the PowerPoint / Prezi presentations also apply to this video • If video does not completely explain the topic, be prepared to answer questions if necessary • Five question quiz needs to be part of the video at the end (if not in the video, provide copies of questions for all students in the class)

TOPIC 1 Physical/Chemical Properties of MAtter • (A)  differentiate between physical and chemical changes and properties; • (B)  identify extensive and intensive properties; • (C)  compare solids, liquids, and gases in terms of compressibility, structure, shape, and volume; and • (D)  classify matter as pure substances or mixtures through investigation of their properties.

Topic 2 periodic table • (A)  explain the use of chemical and physical properties in the historical development of the Periodic Table; • (B)  use the Periodic Table to identify and explain the properties of chemical families, including alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, noble gases, and transition metals; and • (C)  use the Periodic Table to identify and explain periodic trends, including atomic and ionic radii, electronegativity, and ionization energy.

Topic 3 Atomic Structure • (A)  understand the experimental design and conclusions used in the development of modern atomic theory, including Dalton's Postulates, Thomson's discovery of electron properties, Rutherford's nuclear atom, and Bohr's nuclear atom; • (B)  use isotopic composition to calculate average atomic mass of an element; and

Topic 4 GASES • Understand the principles of ideal gas behavior, kinetic molecular theory, and the conditions that influence the behavior of gases. • Describe and calculate the relations between volume, pressure, number of moles, and temperature for an ideal gas as described by Boyle's law, Charles' law, Avogadro's law, Dalton's law of partial pressure, and the ideal gas law;

Topic 5 bonding • (A)  name ionic compounds containing main group or transition metals, covalent compounds, acids, and bases, using International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature rules; • (B)  write the chemical formulas of common polyatomic ions, ionic compounds containing main group or transition metals, covalent compounds, acids, and bases; • (C)  construct electron dot formulas to illustrate ionic and covalent bonds; • (D)  describe the nature of metallic bonding and apply the theory to explain metallic properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity, malleability, and ductility; and

Topic 7 Lab Safety • (A)  demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations, including the appropriate use of safety showers, eyewash fountains, safety goggles, and fire extinguishers; • (B)  know specific hazards of chemical substances such as flammability, corrosiveness, and radioactivity as summarized on the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); and • (C)  demonstrate an understanding of the use and conservation of resources and the proper disposal or recycling of materials.

Topic 9 Solutions • (A)  describe the unique role of water in chemical and biological systems; • (B)  develop and use general rules regarding solubility through investigations with aqueous solutions; • (C)  distinguish between types of solutions such as electrolytes and nonelectrolytes and unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions; • (D)  investigate factors that influence solubilities and rates of dissolution such as temperature, agitation, and surface area;

Topic 10 acids and bases • (A)  define acids and bases and distinguish between Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry definitions and predict products in acid base reactions that form water; • (B)  understand and differentiate among acid-base reactions, precipitation reactions, and oxidation-reduction reactions; • (C)  define pH and use the hydrogen or hydroxide ion concentrations to calculate the pH of a solution; and • (D)  distinguish between degrees of dissociation for strong and weak acids and bases.
