The Construction Industry and disability Number of disabled people in all UK industry - 13% (3.4 million out of 23 million) Disabled people in the Construction Industry – 7% The Construction industry is 5th=, behind Education, Public Service and Banking. But well ahead of Agriculture, Fishing, Energy and Water (1%) (Labour Force Survey 2007)

    5. Inequality At present 18% of the UK working age population have a disability 13% of those with a disability are working. In London, 45% of all benefit claimants are on ESA or Incapacity benefit – slightly behind the UK average of 50%, but both figures clearly disproportionate.

    6. Do disabled people have a place in the UK construction industry? Based on a survey by Salford of the top 100 UK contractors in the UK. In general, contractors are less likely to have appropriate policies and practices in place to support disabled job applicants through the recruitment process. Contractors as employers are more likely to make `reasonable adjustments' as required by the UK Disability Discrimination Act if the adjustment is relatively inexpensive, such that they provide an inclusive approach to the employment of disabled people. Contractors work hard to ensure that if an employee becomes disabled they are appropriately supported in continued employment. Only a small number of construction organizations believed that `disabled people do not have a place in the UK construction industry'. (Salford University, 2005)

    7. What does this mean? Construction industry below average in terms of employing disabled people, but by no means the worst. The industry on the whole is willing to support those who become disabled whilst at work. Contractors are fairly supportive about making adjustments, so long as they are affordable. But they are unsophisticated about the policies and procedures, according to the research. There is scope to do more, but there is help on hand
