Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian scientist, first arranged the periodic table in order of an element's atomic mass. • The modern periodic table is arranged in order of atomic numbers.
Three Main Parts: • 1. Metals • 2. Non-metals • 3. Metalloids
1. Metals-shiny,good conductor, malleable, ductile, solids (except mercury) • 2. Non-metals- dull, poor conductor, brittle (most),non-ductile, over half gases, one liquid (bromine), rest are solids
3. Metalloids : possess properties of both metals and non-metals • e.g. • Si -silicon, • Ge –germanium • Sb -antimony
Chemical Symbols **are used to identify the different elements. • e.g. metals: Au -gold, Cu- Copper non-metals: O -oxygen,C-carbon • - can all be found organised in a periodic table.
The periodic table has: • Periods: horizontal rows • Groups: vertical columns • families: possess similar chemical properties
Group 1: • Alkali Metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) • soft, malleable, high lustre • highly reactive (especially with water and halogens) • Video clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m55kgyApYrY
Group 2: • Alkali Earth Metals (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) • reactive, but not as reactive as the alkali metals • forms salts with the halogens
Group 17: • Halogens (F, Cl, Br, I, At) • "salt" formers • very reactive and toxic
Groups 3-12 • Transition Metals • e.g. Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Au, Ag, Hg • not very reactive, hard, tough, shiny
Group 3 • Lanthanides and Actinides • inner-transition elements • Lanthanides (elements 57-71): e.g. La, Ce, Pm • "Rare Earth Metals" • Actinides (elements 89 -103): e.g. Ac, U, Pu
Group 18 • Noble Gases • e.g. He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn • very unreactive, colourless, monatomic gases • outer valence shells are filled, thus very stable
