  1. Science Class OBJECTIVE: to master averages and the math to figure them out. Using the paper I just handed out, we will work these problems together.

  2. Averages are used in school to show your grade on a test or your science grade for the quarter on your report card. Each year the school figures out your GPA or grade point average, and then you get one for your whole high school career. Where else are averages used? ________________________________

  3. Let’s imagine Derek Jeter is playing in the spring and he’s been up to bat 87 times. He made a hit 28 times and out all the rest. What is his batting average at this point?

  4. Let’s imagine Derek Jeter is playing in the spring and he’s been up to bat 87 times. He made a hit 28 times and out all the rest. What is his batting average at this point? 28 hits 87 at bats = 0.3218…. Which we change to THREE places and cancel the zero … Jeter’s batting average is .322

  5. What if on the next night he gets one hit and strikes out three other times. Now he’s got 29 hits and 91 at bats. What is his average now?

  6. What if on the next night he gets one hit and strikes out three other times. Now he’s got 29 hits and 91 at bats. What is his average now? 29 hits 91 at bats = 0.3186… Which we change to THREE places and cancel the zero … Jeter’s batting average is .319

  7. What would happen if you get onto the school baseball or softball team and on your first at bat you get a hit. Then it starts to rain. What is your batting average at that moment? One hit and one at bat?

  8. What would happen if you get onto the school baseball or softball team and on your first at bat you get a hit. Then it starts to rain. What is your batting average at that moment? One hit and one at bat? 1 hit1 at bat = 1.000 which is called “batting 1000” or perfect!

  9. Five kids I know have a bank account that they shared with me. Who has the most money? _______________________ Who has the least money? _______________________ What is the average amount in accounts? _______________________________ Joseph $138.50 Mary $2,425.05 Phil $1008.00 Mia $243.40 Hope $ 620.55

  10. Five kids I know have a bank account that they shared with me. Who has the most money? Mary Who has the least money? Joseph What is the average amount in accounts? $887.10 Joseph $138.50 Mary $2,425.05 Phil $1008.00 Mia $243.40 Hope $ 620.55 $4,435.50 $4,435.50 ― 5 = $887.10

  11. At the Olympics during a gymnastics event, the gymnast earned scores of: 9.1, 9.0, 9.5, 9.6, 9.3, 9.5, and 9.7. The rules say to toss out the highest and the lowest score, then average the rest. What did this gymnast earn for her routine?

  12. So: 9.1 + 9.5 + 9.6 + 9.3 + 9.5 = 47.0 47.0 ― 5 = 9.4 (not too shabby!)

  14. For Homework, right onto this sheet… Write the names for all the humans in your home, and their ages (what ever they say is good enough, people sometimes lie about their ages and that’s okay for this assignment). Calculate the average age of the humans you live with. There are NO PRIZES for lowest or highest, try to be honest and accurate!
