What is VPN and Remote Desktop • VPN: • Allows a secure tunnel to be created from your home computer to the VMC network. • Encrypts information so that confidentially is maintained when accessing • Remote desktop: • Function that allows you to log in from a home computer to work computer Next slides cover steps

  3. Part 1: Request a VPN Account • This part covers how to: • Locate the NCS website from the Main VMC homepage • Log into the NCS website to submit request for VPN account

  4. How to Request VPN access First, you must request a VPN account 1 From VMC home page, click on Resources for Employees 2. Click on “Computer/Technical” 3. Click on “Computer Support (NCS)” 3 2

  5. NCS (Network Computing Services) Website 4 • Click on “Solutions” • Go to “Network” • Go to “Request VPN ACCT”

  6. Complete Request for VPN Account 5 Log in with VUNET ID and password 6 Complete form and click submit

  7. Part 2: Preparing a work computer • This part covers how to: • Enable a work computer to accept remote assistance • Find a work computer’s IP address and know the computer’s name (i.e., the sticker on the computer that starts with NLSSS….) • Log into VMC VPN from home • Remote into a work computer using remote desktop

  8. Enable remote assistance from a work computer 1 2 Click on “System” Click on “Control Panel” 3 Click on “Remote” tab 4 Checkbox “Allow Remote Assistance ” and click ok

  9. Prepare a home computer • This part covers how to: • Log into VMC VPN from home • Remote into your work computer • If you do not know your IP address, click here (or see the document under Hardware/Network titled How to Find the IP Address on a work computer).

  10. Log into VMC VPN from home Go to http://its.vanderbilt.edu/vpn/instructions/ssl-vpn and Jump to Instructions If you have issue with this step, contact the HelpDesk

  11. Remote in to a work computer • Things to remember: • Keep the designated work computer on • Keep computer plugged into the network • Must be logged into the computer • Lock computer before leaving

  12. Log In to VPN From Home 2 From the Start menu, click on Accessories and choose “Remote Desktop Connection” 1 Log into SSL VPN

  13. Remote into your work computer 3 Type in the IP address of the work computer. If this does not work, type in the computer name as it appears on the sticker on the computer. It should start with NLSSS …. Log into the work computer with vunet ID and password

  14. Things to Remember • Must submit for a VPN account from NCS Website • Must know the IP address and the name of the work computer • Must log into SSL VPN before remoting into the work computer For questions, please call the HELPDESK at 34(3) HELP
