  6. Scenario identification

  7. Calibrating • Guiding Question: “What are the gaps/growth areas indicated for this teacher based on present performance levels and the standards?” • Necessary when a teacher is unable to analyze practice and any gaps between current performance and desired standards.

  8. Consulting • Guiding Question: “What information, ideas and technical resources will be most useful to this teacher at this time?” • “Skillful supervisors propose teacher goals to promote student achievement and professional growth and provide opportunities for the teacher to choose and prioritize.” • Caution, if overused, the consulting stance builds dependency

Collaborating • Guiding Question: “What are some ways to balance my contributions with the teacher’s experiences and expertise?” • The supervisor provides support for idea generation balanced with respect for the teacher’s ability to generate ideas and solutions. • The teacher and supervisor jointly clarify standards and ensure shared understanding.

Coaching • Guiding Question: “What mental and emotional resources might be most useful for this teacher at this time?” • The teacher is the primary source of problem frames, gap analysis, potential solutions and strategies. • Supervisor supports idea production and exploration of “whys” and “hows” of choices, possibilities and connections.

Jigsaw • Protocol • Part 2 – Explain to Colleagues • In groups of 4, each pick one of the 4 stances to read the description. • Be ready to describe the stance to your colleagues • Be ready to describe the points in the conversation where the evaluator needs to make a choice on the stance he/she will take.
