  1. How and why did hospitals and the care of the sick change in the C19th? How do I answer a ‘what can I learn from’ question to at least target grade?

  2. Starter • Nightingale factors sheet.

  3. Review requirements of ‘Compare the impact of/importance of’ style questions. Refer to pro forma and text book for ideas. • Analyse question: ‘Compare the impact for medicine and health care of the careers of Hunter, Nightingale and Garrett Anderson’ (12 marks). What would you need to do in this answer? Refer to p29 of NTB and to level ladders. (re-jigsaw groups from last lesson in order to do this).

  4. Main 1 • Outline main changes in hospitals and factors using p.30/1 of NTB. • Extension - Analysis of the role of factors in the change. • Use resource sheet 2.8a

  5. Main 2 • What can you learn from the pictures about the changes in hospitals between the early and late 19th Century? (Pictures in NTB resource book, sheets 2.8a). Complete assessment allowing 6 minutes.

  6. Main 3 • Peer mark assessment using mark scheme. Set targets for future using target setting sheet.

  7. Plenary • Review work under visualiser.

  8. Homework • Read pages 32-33 of NTB. What is the difference between the role of the apothecary and that of the pharmacist? • Use twigscract. Which factors helped to improve the quality of medicines in the 19th Century?
