Today’s Essential Question: Does Jonathan Ferreira’s experience support OR refute Robert Frost’s idea that taking the road less travelled “makes all the difference.” • Embedding • To enclose or surround closely (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). • In an essay it means that you surround the passage with your own words. You lead into the passage with your words. • Example: As the interview comes to a close Ferreira shares that “…his future career path is a little fuzzy” (Joseph 1). • The underlined phrase embeds the passage from the novel into the writer’s sentence.

I like Beyonce. Big deal’ ” (Joseph 1). • A better style of embedding (B) makes the passage smoothly flow in the sentence. For example When asked about bullying that occurred during his high school years Ferreira asserts,“ ‘I knew who I was. I like Beyonce. Big deal’ ” (Joseph 1) . • The best style (A) of embedding flawlessly incorporates the passage into the sentence. For example When Ferreira was bullied in high school for his musical taste, he ignored it because he “ ‘…knew who [he] was. [He] like[d] Beyonce. Big deal’ “(Joseph 1).

Today’s Essential Question: Does Jonathan Ferreira’s experience support OR refute Robert Frost’s idea that taking the road less travelled “makes all the difference.” • Tools to use when embedding • In order to show you are leaving words out of the passage, the writer can use an ellipsis—three periods in a row (…). For example, Ferreira shares his struggles as he explains that his mother “…worked 14 to 15 hours a day…before she became disabled by diabetes…” (Joseph 1). Use the ellipsis if you leave out words in the middle of the passage. If you use just a short passage (about five words), no ellipsis needed. • Or if the sentence is grammatically incorrect in context with the essay and sentence, changes can be made by using brackets around the [word] or [around the words] being changed to make the sentence grammatically correct. For example, When Ferreira was bullied in high school for his musical taste, he ignored it because he “ ‘…knew who [he] was. [He] like[d] Beyonce. Big deal’ “(Joseph 1).

Lead into the passage with the appropriate context. “Because Mr. Ferreira had no computer at home, he would leave home by 6a.m. so he could arrive at school before classes and use the computers there to finish his homework”(Joseph 1) Tips: 1. Go back to the article and reread what is happening so you can provide accurate context. 2. You don’t have to use all of the passage. You can use key phrases to help flawlessly incorporate the passage into your sentence.
