  3. About Us! Keli Schwagerus- 15th year teaching. She has always worked with students having unique learning needs. She will be teaching Math and Language Arts. Marcie Charlesworth- This is her 13th year teaching and 11 of those years were teaching 6th grade. She will be teaching Math and Science. Glee Mellor- 25th year of teaching. She has taught 6th grade for 13 years and most of those were years of teaching Language Arts and Social Studies as she will this year.

  4. 6th Grade Core Academy • • The goal of the Academy is for students to become more confident and skilled in all academic areas, with a specific focus on math and language arts. • The classes will be smaller, and having fewer students per teacher will allow for more teacher support for each student. • • We will also focus on developing good study habits and organizational skills. • • Academy students will also have classes in science, social studies, life fitness, and will have an exploratory period.

  7. Your Student’s Job: Being Prepared to Learn! • Be on time • Each student must have a 3-ring binder with dividers. Pocket dividers would be best, but regular dividers with one, 3-hole punched pocket folder would be fine. • Have all materials- check your supply list please. • Binder Reminder, filled out accurately every day • Listening and following directions

  9. Mathematics • Course 1: Numbers to Algebra (Holt)- 6th grade textbook. • Holt online-- http://my.hrw.com • Two student workbooks to be brought to school daily • Math journals • Standards based • Supported with hands-on manipulatives and teacher-created materials.

Language Arts Activities • Daily Oral Language • DOL quizzes on Thursday • Mountain Language • Spelling lessons weekly with tests Friday • Grammar lessons weekly • Book Report Projects • ( students will get a calendar of due dates) • Reading from text and novels, stories using rich vocabulary • Essay writing -narrative, response to literature and persuasive essays are emphasized

Exploratory Sixth grade students will have four to six week rotation of various classes with their Exploratory experience: Performance Arts Poetry Drama Engineering Art Newspaper Technology Math and Language Arts remediation for students as needed. Band students will have Band all year- no rotation

Study Period This is a flexible class: • Students may be assigned work • May be a time to finish class work or do homework • Opportunity to check in with teachers Students will get a letter grade for Study Period based on: • Being prepared • Binder Reminder being completed and signed weekly. • Working quietly and using time wisely • Parent signatures returned in a timely manner.

  17. Homework • Homework is assigned nightly. • Homework expectations will increase throughout the school year. • Students will have short and long term projects. We will work with your student to help them manage their time so that they can be successful. • new.schoolnotes.com

  18. Resources for 6th Graders • Required Opportunity at lunch as needed • 6thGrade Homework Club and Solutions each week on Thursday after school from 2:15-3:15. (Bus available at 2:50 for students). • Study Period, every day but Wednesday • Homework information posted at new.schoolnotes.com • Grades available online • Teachers are available by email and phone
