  11. Building Blocks of MindUP Social Emotional Learning Positive Psychology Mindful Education Neuroscience

  12. The MindUP Brain Prefrontal Cortex (executive function, planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision-making and moderating correct social behavior) Hippocampus (compares new learning to past learning and encodes information from working memory to long-term storage) Reticular Activating System (filters ALL sensory input to the brain) Amygdala (encodes emotional messages for long-term storage in the brain)

  13. The RAS Millions of bits of sensory data available every second Reticular Activating System ONLY about 2000 bits get through the RAS each second

  14. Stress in ChildrenBlame the Brain, Not the Child The Amygdala FIGHT Disruptive in class FLIGHT Distracted during class FREEZE Withdrawn from class

  15. The Hippocampus Old information and new information are thought to be stored away in different areas of the cerebral cortex, or the "gray matter” of the brain. The hippocampus is one of the more important parts of the brain that processes memories.

  16. The Prefrontal Cortex The “Thinking Brain” integrates affective and cognitive processes that controls decision-making, moderates cognitive functions, and corrects social behavior.
