  1. Write a one-paragraph extended ending to the novel. Think about the following questions as you make up your story: • What happens after Rowdy and Arnold become friends again? • Does Rowdy go with him to Reardan? • Does Rowdy become a star NBA player? • What happens to Arnold?   3. The sentence that says what your entire paper will be about. • Example: In Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, Arnold learns about hope and dreams. Thesis Statement

  4. The main paragraphs of your essay. • Each one will look like this: • TS (Topic Sentence) • LCD 1 (Lead-in TO Concrete Detail) • CM (Commentary) • CS (Concluding Sentence) Body Paragraph

  5. Says what the paragraph will be about. • Introduces the first topic from your thesis. • Ex: Throughout the novel, Arnold learns about hope. Does it go back to the thesis? Topic Sentence(Black)

  6. Evidence. • A sentence from the story that gives an example of your topic. • Ex: “Hope, to me, was some mythical creature” (35). Concrete Detail(Red)

  7. Says who is speaking and what is happening. • Introduces the quote. • Ex: When Arnold talks to Mr. P, he says “hope, to me, is some mythical creature” (31). Lead-in(Red)

  8. Explain the meaning of the quote. • Don’t just summarize it. • 2-3 sentences • Ex: At first, Arnold believes that hope is not for Indians. Hope is a dream that will not ever really come true. Mr. P helps him to see that he can actually have hope outside of the reservation. Commentary(Green)

  9. Last sentence in the paragraph. • Restate your main point. • Ex: Through Mr. P, Arnold learns that hope can really be his. Closing Sentence(Black)

  10. Throughout the novel, Arnold learns about hope.When Arnold talks to Mr. P, he says “hope, to me, is some mythical creature” (31).At first, Arnold believes that hope is not for Indians.   11. Throughout the novel, Arnold learns about dreams. When he thinks about his parents, Arnold realizes that “nobody ever paid attention to their dreams” (10). Arnold begins to understand that his parents did have dreams to be someone, but no one helped them achieve them. He realizes that his parents aren’t successful, but that it is not because they did not want to be. It is just that no one paid attention to them. In the story, Arnold learns that even if it does not seem like it, everyone has dreams. Body Paragraph Example
