  3. Experiential Learning • Experiential Learning is one of the hallmarks of a Pacific education • The Geosciences Department provides this in multiple ways: • Field-based curriculum • Internships • Undergraduate Research

  4. Field-based Curriculum • All courses involve field work • All upper level courses involve at least one multi-day field experience • Field trips involve problem-based learning • Students are involved in planning the trips

  5. Internships • Formal (students register for credit) • Informal (student employment) • Examples: • Anderson & Associates (geotech. consulting) • CalTrans • DeltaKeeper • CA Dept. of Fish & Game

  6. Undergraduate Research • Types of projects • Part of faculty research programs • Student-generated projects • NSF-REU programs • Students present at Pacific Undergraduate Research & Creativity Celebration (PURCC) in the spring

  7. Department Culture • Close interaction with students • Intentional advising • Guest speakers • Within courses • Evening lectures
