  1. “Global Carbon Project”pilot case study(CEA-LSCE) Philippe Peylin, Philippe Ciais, Pep Canadell, Zegbeu poussi QUAlity aware VIsualisation for the Global Earth Observation system of systems

  2. Global Carbon Project ? Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  3. Global carbon project • One Carbon Cycle to understand ! (C fluxes) •  Process understanding • Direct need for climate studies • With international commitment treaties (emission reductions) • specific need for REGIONAL flux estimates • “Quality specification” crucial for all applications Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  4. GEO Carbon Community of Practice The GEO Carbon Community of Practice (CCoP) has been established as an open group of scientists, program managers, funding agencies and policy makers with an interest in observing and understanding the global carbon cycle. The group will discuss the way forward for the carbon observing system and facilitate communication between those making observations and those developing models for making sense of the carbon cycle’s complexity. Carbon CoP - CEOS SIT-24 Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  5. Carbon Cycle Web portals Level of associated “Quality data”:highly heterogeneous not yet at the “user required level” Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  6. Model uncertainties (Baye’s theorem) Uncertainties Model – Data fusion(4D var scheme) Data uncertainties Data uncertainties Variational / Matrix / approaches Flux uncertainties difficult to estimate ! Model – Data Fusion for GCP Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  7. Data Quality needs : case of “observation data” • Atmospheric data • In situ data • Satellite data (GOSAT, OCO2) • Land-ecosystem data • In situ data (eddy covariance flux measurements, ….) • Remote sensing of the vegetation activity • Remote sensing of biomass-burning area • Ocean data • In situ pCO2 data (cruises) • Remote sensing of surface chlorophyll Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  8. GCP: atmospheric data • In situ data • - very accurate but sparse • - spatial representativity ? • - Instrumental failure ? • - Quality Data exist..(visualisation under progress) • satellite data • - accuracy issues (biases) ! • - accuracy might vary with space • (cloud/aerosols/… contamination) • - CalVal will produce Quality estimates Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  9. GCP: Land ecosystem data • satellite data • - accuracy vary with space.. • - saturation signal with veg. activity • - link to vegetation function ? • In situ data • - very accurate but sparse • - spatial representativity ? • - “Quality” not well estimated yet.. Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  10. Data Quality needs : case of “estimated fluxes” • Model Quality (link to model uncertainties) • Uncertainties from unknown Processes / Parameters / Forcing • Error Propagation: from parameters to state variables ? • Model documentation : interactive link btw code and docum. • Uncertainties in Model- Data Fusion • How to properly weight all sources of error ? • Model uncertainties still poorly accounted for ! • Non Gaussian errors difficult to handle / represent • Product Validation : crucial ! • Product visualization and Quality data • Link between different Portals (integration in GMES) • How to display level of confidence in “Uncertainty estimates” • Most relevant meta-data ? How to display them ? • Expected inputs from GeoViQua… Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  11. Carbon Tracker Web site (US) Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  12. Global Carbon Project • How to associate Quality information on both flux product and uncertainty estimates ? • How to combine several estimates to derive an overall uncertainty ? • How to simplify the Data Quality information for “non scientist” users? Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  13. GCP: uncertainties estimates ? RMSE estimate Mean flux estimate • How to do when only few estimates ? • Estimates are not independent ? • Uncertainty on the uncertainties is very large ! Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  14. ICOS Integrated Carbon Observation System A European Infrastructure to establish an integrated long-term global C and GHG observation infrastructure Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  15. CARBONES FP7-EU project Climate modellers & other users WP100 System design based on Users requirements WP200 Carbon data assimilation system • Improved ESM • New space missions • Downstream services 30yr Carbon fluxes & pools InterfaceVisualisation Tool WP500 WP400 WP500 WP700 Validation data Assimilation data Added value demonstration WP600 WP300 WP300 Benchmarking Satellite data In situ data “Core services” data Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011

  16. Global carbon project contribution • Need to learn about the GeoViQua developments to : • Precise type of Quality data and Metadata available & useful for project (benefit from other pilot cases) • define which tools/protocols that will be easy to incorporate in the Global Carbon Portal • C-cycle scientists need to learn more on Data Quality & Meta-data standards & visualization tools Kick off meeting. February 17th, 2011
