  2. Background of Marijuana • Most common street drug • Active ingredient: THC • Detected in hair - up to 6 months Urine – up to 1 month • Psychological Addiction • Cannabis Plant • Laws are regulated by the Government through the Controlled Substance Act

  3. Drug Laws Controlled Substance Act-the Federal Government has the right to regulate drug sales across the country

  4. Medical Marijuana -prescribed by a doctor to increase comfort in patients suffering from certain illness including: • cancer and currently using chemotherapy • glaucoma • AIDS

  5. Short Term Effects (immediate) • Reduces reaction time • Reduces coordination • Reduces memory • Impairs judgment – poor choices • Reduces ambition • Increases heart rate • Increases appetite (munchies) • Lowers body temperature

  6. Long Term Effects • Heart & Lung Damage • Kills Brain Cell • Interferes with development and hormones • Psychological addiction • Chronic bronchitis • Weak immune system • Birth Defects • Consequences of poor choices

  7. Signs of Marijuana Use • Bloodshot eyes • Slowed speech • Binge eating • Excessive laughter • Paranoia • Hallucinations

Similarities Tobacco & Marijuana • Both are smoked • Both cause lung damage/disease • Both are common in teens • Kids see both as “less serious” drugs • Both prevent oxygen from traveling to the body & brain • Both reduce energy levels • Both increase risk of asthma, ear infections, and bronchitis if children are exposed

  9. Differences Marijuana: • Damages the brain • Only psychologically addicting • Does not contain tar • Is illegal • Impairs judgment and decisions • Alters brain chemistry • Shows depressant/hallucinogenic qualities

  10. A Gateway Drug What is it? Gateway drug: does not seem as dangerous as other drugs, but those who use it are more likely to experiment with harder drugs Examples: Alcohol & Marijuana!
