  1. Latitude and Longitude Notes 7.3.spi.6. Locate on a map specific lines of longitude and latitude. (i.e., Prime Meridian, International Date Line, Equator, North and South Poles, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic Antarctic circles).

  2. 1) Differentiate between latitude and longitude lines • Longitude lines run north and south • Latitude lines run east and west

  3. 2) What is a hemisphere? List four. • A TERM FOR HALF OF THE GLOBE • North, south, east, and west

  4. 3) How can locations be expressed? • As coordinates (where latitude and longitude meet

  5. 4) Define equator. • The line of 0 degrees latitude

  6. 5) Define prime meridian. • The line of 0 degrees longitude

  7. 6) Draw the 4 hemispheres.

  8. 7) Draw a globe with latitude lines ONLY.

  9. 8) Draw a globe with longitude lines ONLY.

  10. 9 ) Draw the major lines of latitude • North Pole • Arctic Circle • Tropic of Cancer • Equator • Tropic of Capricorn • Antarctic Circle • South Pole

  11. Major Lines- Act it out • Let’s get physical…. • Body parts represent the major lines of latitude • Top of head – North Pole • Ears – Arctic Circle • Shoulders – Tropic of Cancer • Waist – Equator • Knees – Tropic of Capricorn • Shins – Antarctic Circle • Toes – South Pole

  12. 10) Draw the compass rose on your paper

  13. 11) If you’re given a point……

  14. 11) If you’re given a point…… • Step 1- Put your finger on the point • Step 2- Trace your finger straight to the right or left until you reach the end of the map • Step 3- Write down this point. It is the latitude. • Step 4- Put your finger on the point again. • Step 5- Trace your finger straight up or down until you reach the end of the map • Step 6- Write down this point. It is your longitude.

  15. 11) How to get coordinates • Latitude + • Longitude • Coordinates

  16. Find the coordinates of the mountains.

  17. Coordinates • Longitude= 100 degrees east + • Latitude= 40 degrees north • The coordinates are 100 degrees longitude west, 40 degrees latitude north

  18. 12) If you’re given the coordinates…. • Step 1- Put your finger on the longitude (across the top or bottom) • Step 2- Put another finger on the latitude (across either side) • Step 3- Move your fingers together until they meet.

  19. What landmark is at 140 degrees west, 40 degrees north?

  20. What landmark is at 140 degrees west, 40 degrees north? • The San Francisco bridge • Big Ben Grandfather clock • A volcano • The Great Wall of China

  21. The answer is…….. d) The Great Wall of China

  22. In Summary!

  23. East is the direction of rotation of the Earth Latitude: (90oN to 90oS) Longitude: (180oE to 180oW) Prime Meridian 0o Longitude Tropic of Cancer Latitude 23½o North 21st June 66½o 90oE 60oE 30oW 30oE 60oW 90oW 23½o 90o 22nd Sept 20th March North Pole Equator Latitude 0o 23½o 900 22nd December Tropic of Capricorn Latitude 23½o South Longitude 90o West Longitude 90oEast Longitude 60o West Longitude 60o East Longitude 30o West Longitude 30o East South Pole Positioning on the Earth’s Surface Latitude and Longitude together enable the fixing of position on the Earth’s surface.
