  1. CRCT Question To change the shape of her piece of candy, Elly applied heat and pressure. This is an example of: Sedimentary Rock Metamorphic Rock Igneous Rock Plate Tectonics

  2. Science Retest Reteach: Wednesday Retest: Friday

  3. PresentationRubrics

  4. Project Reflection Please take out a sheet of paper and put your first and last name on it  Write a 2 paragraph reflection that includes the following: • Your favorite part about the project • The person(s) that was the most helpful • Was there someone who didn’t do a lot of work? • What worked well • What did you learn • Who was the leader of your group? (in your opinion) • Do you have suggestions for next time?

  5. New Unit

  6. Project Overview

  7. River Systems, Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Soil

  8. Welcome to Georgia Institute of Technology

  9. Georgia REALLY needs your help! For years, Georgia has been in a dispute with Alabama and Florida about the Chattahoochee River and its water sheds. The largest fight is over Lake Lanier. Metro Atlanta wants to take the water from Lake Lanier and use it for it’s increasing population (drinking water.) However, this would effect the amount of water that Alabama and Florida use from it (agriculture, business, natural resources, etc). To better understand this let’s watch this video……. http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/dpp/news/local_news/Tri-State-Water-War-Heads-to-Court-20110309-am-sd

  10. Can you solve this problem? As engineers, you need to think of what Metro Atlanta could do to get the amount of water they need, but abide by the law. You have only 15 minutes to consider how to solve this problem so you will want to tackle only one aspect of it at a time. Then you will do a presentation of your results to the group.

  11. Phase 1 UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE: *Objective Finding—what is the real problem or challenge here? *Fact Finding—Brainstorm all the facts which might even remotely be related to the objective. *Problem Finding—why are there alternative problem definitions? Phrase your question “In What Ways Might We..." Pay particular attention to changing the verbs and the nouns

  12. Phase 2 GENERATING IDEAS: *Idea Finding—Brainstorm your ideas! Did you know? Sometimes a silly statement or idea will actually trigger a great idea which eventually becomes the solution Be sure to write down EVERY idea!

  13. Phase 3 PREPARING FOR ACTION: *Solution Finding—What plan will result in the best solution? *Acceptance Finding—This is where you rank your solutions! Be sure to be able to justify your plan!

  14. Presenting our Ideas!

  15. Weathering Coffee Talk

  16. Weathering • Weathering – is the process by which rock materials are broken down by the action of physical or chemical processes. • Mechanical Weathering – the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means • Chemical Weathering – the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reactions

  17. Mechanical Weathering • Ice • The alternate freezing and thawing of soil and rock – frost action • Ice wedging – water seeps into cracks, water then freezes and expands causing the crack to widen • Abrasion – the grinding and wearing away of rock surfaces through the mechanical action of other rock or sand particles • Wind • Water • Gravity

  18. Plants • Plant roots grow into existing cracks in rocks and expanding roots become so strong that the crack widens • Animals • Any animal that burrows causes mechanical weathering (ants, worms, mice, coyotes, and rabbits) • Mixing and digging by animals can also cause chemical weathering

  19. Chemical Weathering • Water – dissolving of water into a rock can break the rock down over years • Acid Precipitation – rain, sleet, or snow, that contains a high concentration of acids • Caused by burning fossil fuels • High level of acidity can cause very rapid precipitation

  20. Acid in Groundwater – chemical reactions occur between the acid in the groundwater and rock and breaks the rock down • caverns • Acid in Living Things • Lichens – grow on rocks and trees and slowly breaks down the rock • Air – oxygen in the air reacts with iron and forms rust • oxidation

  21. Rate of Weathering • Composition of rocks • Amount of time that rock is exposed to weathering • The amount of exposed surface • More joints or cracks easier broke down

  22. Weathering project Due Friday at the end of the day  Thursday and Friday you will have the labtops!
