  3. What is a sentence? • subject + verb= simple sentence • Sentence test…does it have a subject and a verb? • From Spinelli’s Loser… • “They race” • Is this a sentence? How do you know? • YES!

  4. It is a sentence if… • it answers the following two questions: • Who or what did something? (Subject: They) • What did they do? (Verb: race) • “The core of any sentence is a subject and a verb.”

  5. Let’s simplify these sentences… • The lights cluster brilliantly up the street at Claudia’s house. • What is the subject? • lights • What is the verb? • cluster

  6. Now we are ready to… • do a sentence smack down! • “Are you ready to grammar?”
