  2. Project background • National Student Design Competition • Project Choice: Accessible Blood Glucose Monitor • Funding: $ 2000 • Advisor: Professor Baudenbacher

  3. Statistics on diabetes • 7% of the population have diabetes (20.8 million) • 12 000 – 24 000 new cases of blindness each year. • 60-70% of diabetic have mild to severe form of nervous system damage

  4. Our Clients.. All clients have diabetes • Dave – 22, has limited use of his right arm and leg. • Wanda – 12, has low vision, encouraged to start administering insulin to herself • Lloyd – 80, has some hearing loss and is very overweight (400lbs). • Arnold - has Parkinson’s disease, and experiences slight to moderate tremors. He lives alone.

  5. Project Goal • The blood glucose monitor must • communicate effectively • visual display and voice output. • calibration and expiration dates of test strips • ease of learning, storage of all components, cleaning and maintenance. • affordable and portable

  6. Our Goal… • To win the First Prize for the competition, receive the $1000 cash prize.

  7. Problem • Existing blood glucose monitors in the market do not satisfy the needs of all our clients. Also, some of them are quite expensive. • Available voice box in the market work with only certain monitors and are expensive. E.g voice box for Ultra

  8. Design Considerations • Use existing product - test strip based monitor • Build voice box for audio output • Build finger placing guide for client with tremor

  10. Technical Steps 1) Obtaining signal from glucose monitor • Approach 1: Analog signal from sensor (Failed) • Approach 2: Digital signal from LCD (Failed) • Approach 3: Analog signal from beeper (Succeeded) 2) Build circuit

  11. Current Status • Similar to Accu Chek Compact – but has beeper to signify the results • e.g – ‘2’ will have two beeps • The signal we obtained from Accu Chek Compact Plus is from the beeper Accu Chek Compact Plus beeper

  12. Current Status • We are now trying to rectify the signal and convert it into a digital signal that could be used for our speech chip.
