  1. Welcome to Day Two Conception Stage: Church Planting Dream is Born

  2. Video: Mission

  3. Conception: 1st Trimester • Baby’s DNA • Ministry DNA

  4. Day Two Verse: Dream Big • Ephesians 3:20 (MSG) 20 God can do anything, you know— far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

  5. Problem: Clear & Compelling

  6. 1. The Nature of Planters • Catalytic, non detailed leaders • The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. • Titus 1:5 (NIV)

  7. 2. Nature of Planning Books • Guiding Principles • Core Value • Mission • Purpose • Cause • Vision: Big Picture • Mission: Big Picture

  8. 3. Dynamic Nature of Planning • Proverbs 16:1 (ESV) 1 The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. • Proverbs 16:9 (ESV) 9 The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. • Proverbs 19:21 (ESV) 21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand. • Acts 16: Macedonian Call

  9. 4. Stakes Very High • If you do not have a clear and compelling vision you will not be able to • Recruit followers • Develop leaders • Raise support • Attract unchurched • Plant healthy church

  10. Mission Comes First • What matters is not the leader's charisma. What matters is the leader's mission. Therefore, the first job of the leader is to think through and define the mission of the institution. The mission must come first. This is the lesson of the last 50-100 years. • Peter Drucker

  11. Vision Clarity • Habakkuk 2:2 (ESV) 2 And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.”

  12. Vision Clarity Circle Tool • Vision is the clear and compelling picture of your preferred future as leaders believe it can and must be, based upon an accurate understanding of God, self, and your ministry context.

  13. Vision Clarity Circle Six Primal Planning Questions

  14. Power of Primal Questions • Mission Question: What business are you in? • Target Question: Who is your customer? • Bridge Question: What do they value? • Metrics Question: How’s business? • Vision Question: What is your plan?

  15. What business are you in? • In the late 1800s, railroads dominated the transportation industry of the USA. • But they forgot they were in the transportation business instead of railroad business.

  16. What business are you in? • In 1968 65% of all the watches sold, and 90% of the profit were controlled by the Swiss. Today less than 10%. • But they forgot they were in the time business and not the watch matching business.

  17. What business are you in?

  18. What business are you in? In the church building business instead of the disciple building business

  19. Most Common Answer • Christians: 89% • The primary mission of the church is to take care of me and my family’s needs. • Leaders: 11% • Make Disciples

  20. Mission Definition Mission is the brief, broad, biblical mandate that sets the ministry direction of your church.

  21. Mission: Ministry Compass • Mission is to the ministry what a rudder is to a ship, a compass to a navigator, a template to a machinist.

  22. 1. BRIEF Mission vs. Vision

  23. Moses: Mission vs. Vision • Mission:Bring my people out (Ex. 3:10) • Vision: Promised land • 9a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. 11 But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. 12 It is a land the LORD your God cares for; the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end. Deuteronomy 11:9-12

  24. Jesus: Mission vs. Vision • Mission: Luke 19:10 (ESV) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. • Vision: Luke 4:18-19 (ESV) 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

  25. Early Church: Mission vs. Vision • Mission: Go … Make Disciples of all people • Vision: After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." Rev. 7:9-10

  26. T-Shirt Test

  27. 2. BROAD You Can’t Be Single Focused!

  28. Single Focus Churches

  29. Mission Balance • “Without a system and a structure to balance the five purposes, your church will overemphasize the purpose that expresses the gifts and passion of its pastor.” • Rick Warren

  30. 3. BIBLICAL That Means Great Commission

  31. Primal Mission • Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  32. Young Church Planter • Funny how some things never really change. Church life may look a lot different than it did 10, 20, 50, 500 years ago, but there is at least one area in the church that ought to look exactly the same. • In every generation, the church ought to be busy doing the Master’s business- making disciples. Jesus did it. The early church did it. Our spiritual fathers did it- and now it’s our turn.

  33. Your Application Write your mission statement.

  34. Primal Planning Poster • Write the mission copy for your web site. • What is your mission statement in 25 words or less? • Does it pass the 3B test?

  35. Report Back • Share with the rest of the group, your mission statement as far as you have developed?

  36. The End
