  1. Using credible library resources

  2. Why use credible resources? • - ‘Sell’ not easy as it sounds, because our audience is smart! • To support your argument • You need to show your connection to the topic • You need to show you’ve done your research • Credibility is KEY when convincing someone. • Ex. Would you believe ‘smoking’ statistics from MTV or the American Medical Association? Would your audience?

  3. How do I select my sources? • Search by subject, keyword, or phrase • Putting “...” around ideas will be more limiting • Must usually think of synonyms to help narrow ideas • Easiest now-a-days- is to use internet, but BEWARE! • Lots of different search engines • Google not the best for everything…try alta vista or virtual library…

  4. {So…ask yourself} • Who wrote/sponsored the website? – • how are they qualified? – do a search on them… • do other researchers cite this author? • Are there links to other sites? • Why was the information written? • Was it to see something, change your mind or advance a cause? Or is it objective?

  5. Is the content credible? • Are there sources cited? • Is the information current • Does the site contain misspellings or grammar? {It can also be helpful…} • The URL extension can often tell you if it’s a credible source or not. .com or .net tells you it’s for PROFIT .org usually tells you not for profit information .gov, .edu, .mil are the most credible resources

  6. Must learn to use book sources too • Be functional in a library • Search by subject; write down the title, author, call number and year of publication. • Ask a reference librarian if you need help • - Provide a copy of the first page of paper references

  7. Attribution and Works Cited page - Just like in a paper, attribute your sources -In the speech: tell the name and qualifying credentials • If you don’t, not only will the audience question you, you’ll be guilty of plagiarism! • Ex. “According to…nationalgeographic.com…”

  8. Use quotes, statistics and facts well! • Don’t ramble on with a quote – • cut quotes to the shortest and most relevant information possible. • -When citing numbers and statistics • Use them sparingly – not all numbers please! • Use numbers in ‘real’ terms • Ex. Whole numbers 71.3 % people →roughly 7:10 people • Ex. ratios not percentages – 33.6 million below poverty…1:7 people • Ex. For dates, use month or season Oct 12, 1492, Fall 1492…

  9. Provide a Works Cited page • References page tells people how they can access the information you used to support your speech • Reference pages come in several styles, and depending on what your major is, you may have to cite references in APA, MLA, CHICAGO or some other style. • For this class, try MLA • It will be required along with your completed outline on your speaking day

  10. Format is Important! • Each ‘style’ of documentation is a little different, so make sure you follow the formatting precisely. • Pay attention to every space, period and comma! • ex. Professor Adams • Try these! • http://citationmachine.net/index2.php • http://www.easybib.com/
